WK2 Break In ... Glass and Damage... and no alarm

Hey guys.. this one might make some of you cry when you see the pics... :)

My three month old WK2 Overland Summit was broken into a week ago in the parking lot where I live. 32 other cars were broken into at the same time, but mine definitely received more damage than most of the other cars.

Apparently the window glass that Chrysler uses in the side windows is not the regular glass that is in most cars. It appears to be laminated and tempered, like windshield glass... this, of course, makes it a LOT harder to break into.

They first tried to get in the driver window, and hit it a few times with some sort of sharp object (probably something like a life hammer), and it broke, but didn't let them in... they then banged on the passenger window at least six times before they were able to fold the window in, and then back out, to get into the Jeep.

They were obviously pretty pissed that it was so hard to break in, because they did a good amount of damage to the exterior window frames as well.

In the process of breaking in, glass flew all over the Jeep... they opened the door (why the alarm didn't go off, I don't know)... and as they climbed through looking for stuff to steal, they pushed glass into the leather seats, cutting them up. There was a bit of blood on the seats, so I hope they got good and cut up and end up with some sort of life-ending infection.

When I tried to start it up, the Jeep would turn on for a second, then it would shut the engine off with an "Airbag fault" error message on the display. Apparently some of the glass in the passenger seat went into the side airbags, and disabled them... so it had to be towed back to the dealer.

Here are the other pictures of the damage... it's pretty extensive.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jdmatlo...57627108284397

I got the final repair bill back today (well, my insurance company did). Total cost: $7104. The front windows alone were $614 each... and the center console arm rest (just the cushion and leather cover) was $1100. (Censored invoice here: http://flic.kr/p/a7PLbT )

They didn't steal anything. There was nothing to steal; I did something uncharacteristic and took my iPod inside that night to sync it.

My 1991 Jeep Cherokee was also broken into; that one only had liability insurance, and cost me a nice $290 because the glass for it is hard to find. Ugh.

Another guy in my condo building has a 2011 Charger SRT. His had the same windows as mine, and they beat the ever living crap out of his... they also kicked his doors denting them up pretty badly.. (I wish I had pictures of it, but it was towed before I got out there with my camera). His total repair bill was around $9000.

So.. the main reason I'm posting here... why the freaking HELL didn't the alarm go off? They broke the windows, and OPENED THE PASSENGER DOOR WITHOUT A KEY. If that alarm had gone off, it would have definitely woken people up... even though most people ignore alarms, I bet they wouldn't have stuck around to screw with other cars...

Anyway... just be aware... that your WK2 is going to be REALLY expensive to repair if it gets broken into... and because of the windows, when they do get into it, they're going to be really pissed off.... :smh:

Super thumbs up to Progressive Insurance and Ed Voyles Jeep Chrysler in Marietta GA. It's been ten days since the break in, and I'm getting it back tomorrow... the insurance rep that was out there every day checking on it tells me it looks like it's brand new... the only thing I'm worried about are the seats, since they're not the factory sewn ones now...

Ouch! Did the dealer confirm no issue with the alarm system? Yes, seems strange alarms were not triggered by those actions - that's what they're there for, right?!

Hope your Jeep comes back as good as new!

It is a shame that the alarm didn't go off. You're lucky to have a good dealer. Maybe they will make it better than new, and fix the alarm.
That much damage would be considered felony level. Did the police take the blood (DNA) as evidence in case they grab someone?

OMG, That's terrible mate.

I'm astounded the alarm didn't go off!?!?!

I don't have a WK2, but my old WK's alarm will go off if the door is manually unlocked and opened, and the interior sensor will send the alarm off if someone so much as reached into the Jeep with the window down.

I'm flabbergasted!

Did anyone else's alarm go off? Maybe they all went off and everyone ignored them?

You would think atleast yours or the '11 SRT's alarm would have went off. they're brand new?!

Shitty deal, man.

My Jeep got broken into and they took a limited edition hat that could only be purchased in one store in California, that a member on here picked up for me and shipped to Canada. I was really bummed about it.

Feel for you. I've all but given up street parking in Philly because they break in so often. I don't leave anything showing, but junkies will take anything, even prescription glasses on one occasion.
