Wheel locked up on gravel road?
My trail-rated Summit is the first vehicle I've owned with any off-road ability. My previous ride was a soccer-mom minivan that couldn't go faster than 15mph on a gravel road.

I went cruising on some logging roads in southwest Washington state. These are a mix of dirt and gravel. Just experimenting, I found that selecting "auto" terrain didn't give me enough control: the jeep slid around a lot on turns. The "mud/sand" setting gave me better control, so I used that when not on hard pavement.

I parked at a viewpoint, killed the engine, walked around a while, got back in, started it up, selected mud/sand, and started to drive. The jeep acted as though one of the wheels wasn't turning. I put it in Park, got out, and observed a dark streak on the ground behind the right rear tire. It looks like that wheel wasn't turning at all. I put it in Drive again and moved slowly while my daughter observed all wheels. They all turned correctly, and we drove off with no further worries.

What was going on here? Is it a mistake to use the mud/sand setting on gravel roads?

Re: Wheel locked up on gravel road?
Mud/Sand mode should work well on loose gravel. Maybe ESC was acting up causing the vehicle to wrongly apply that one rear brake. When you switched drive modes it reset the ESC system hence the issue went away. It will likely never happen again.
