My '99 WJ 4.7L has a blown head gasket

I got my jeep towed to my mechanic and he told me that there was oil all up in the coolant and the head gasket is blown. I don't feel like dropping 2k on this job. I have a good bit of mechanical ability and am considering doing it myself...anyone think that is a real possibility?

anyone with a step by step and anything else I should do while I basically have the engine apart? or anything that can be done to make it more efficient at highway speeds with not too much cost?

thanks,

Jon

me and a buddy changed a head gasket on mine, it took us 14hrs. not easy and time consuming. there are alot of steps you need to follow exactly like tightening the head bolts. you gotta remove just about the whole top part of the engine. intake mani, injectors, a/c compressor. take the cam out. gotta make sure you dont loose timing. bla bla bla. pain in the butt. but i can be done.

Just curious, but why do you have to take the cam? I've never removed a head on the 4.7L engine. But I have removed them on a Cobra before (DOHC) and they don't have to be removed.
