Possible blown engine on my Jeep :/

Let my dad borrow the car last night and when he was stuck in traffic on the way back at the RFK bridge he noticed steam spray from under the hood and the temp gauge shot straight to 260, which then he heard a loud pop. Bridge and tunnel officers had to tow him back over the bridge. I met up with him so we can tow it back to a place where i can keep it and popped open the hood I immediately noticed the hose that leads into radiator top left side was literally hanging off... after taking a closer look the whole side of the radiator, which to my amazement, was shattered into PIECES and what plastic?!? I also noticed that coolant and oil was all over the place and a lot of it at that. Jeep wont turn on but when i turned the ignition all i would get is a rapid clicking.

From what i can tell its a rest in peace situation

radiator def needs to be replaced
water pump is what has seemed to fail and cause this
with all the oil and coolant shooting out of the hose it all doesnt sound good to me

so after only having the Jeep for a year and half I don't think ill be spending all that money to fix it.

:(

Can you determine where the oil is coming from? I've had the water pump send the fan through the radiator and it really wasn't that expensive to fix.

Now if it overheated, it might have seized the engine. Try turning it by hand.

Re: Possible blown engine on my Jeep :/

Kind of good news here... i disconnected the battery for a few minutes and reconnected it and the jeep started up no knocks a strange sounds but didn't leave it on too long because nothing is in the cooling system.

so a sign of hope the only thing im worrying about really is the head gasket
and also doesnt explain all the oil/antifreeze mixture all over the place.

so that being said, anybody have suggestions on what radiators are a good replacement? waterpump etc?

Could the oil be tranny oil? Don't know much about the 4.0, but is the tranny oil cooler integrated with the radiator?

The oil you are seeing is most likely tranny fluid that uses the radiator for cooling. Rock auto has good prices on that sort of thing but shipping might be expensive. I am happy with the radiator I bought from oreilly's, not sure what brand it was through.

If you havent noticed any loss of oil in the engine or any antifreeze in the engine oil then I'm betting your head gasket is ok, tranny oil is more than likely what you are seeing due to the catastrophic fail of your radiator.

Good Luck!

Yeah i agree with you theres no sign of oil loss and any coolant/oil mix... its also very possible that oil residue that was already on the engine mixed with whatever coolant shot out.

I bet you're seeing transmission oil man...there are cooler lines that run right into the side of the radiator. Check your trans oil level. I bet once you get a new radiator in there (good time for a good flush too) you'll be golden.

That is one ugly radiator fail right there!

I've had good luck with 1-800-radiator in the past...oh and radiatorbarn.com

For those kinds of parts, I tend to recommend Napa for price, availability, and overall quality. Flowcooler makes a high-perf water pump if that's the direction you want to go. Summit Racing carries them. I've not had any personal experience with the Flowcooler units, but I've heard good things. The only other thing I could think of is to look for part-outs for the fan. I wouldn't take a used water pump...
