UPDATE - Bad Cat at 26K (Great start to the week - Check Engine Light!)

On the way into work this morning, just tooling along and BLAM - yellow check engine light comes on - 26K miles on the odo. Seems to be running OK, although occasionally I do feel something I guess you could characterize as a skip, but with this damn MDS it is hard to tell.

Checked fuel cap when I got to work and it was tight.

Dealer will take it in after work and give me a loaner - will update later.

If the MIL is steady, it is an advisory. If it is steady flashing, it is a warning that should be diagnosed quickly.

You should be able to see the primary codes (some secondary codes do not show up). Retrieving codes directions: http://www.wkjeeps.com/trouble_codes.htm Make sure driver's door is closed. May take you several times to get the knack of it.

Same link decodes the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

Since you are under the new car 3/36 warranty, the dealer can do it at no $$ with his StarScan tool.

Good to know about the steady vs. flashing light.

Dropped it off at the dealer this evening - had something else needing fixing that they ordered a part for last time I was there.

Dealer just called and said they are replacing the cat convertor. Wow, 26K and it is already shot??!!

Is this a common issue? Any idea what could cause a premature malfunction like this?

Ask them for the DTC(s) that were generated. There is a long list of potential causes, but the diagnostic will help narrow it down somewhat. Besides being just plain nosy () , we are interested to ensure that the root cause is solved for you, not just the symptom.

My cats and all four O2 sensors have been replaced; O2 sensors were replaced twice and we still do not have root cause. Keep a log of anytime you get a MIL / DTC so it is demonstrable if it becomes an issue after warranty expires.

By putting the dealer / Chrysler on notice, they cannot deny it was a pre-existing condition. Be civil, polite, but firm. Dealer can be your best advocate with the Chrysler techinical folks.
