2012 6 Speed feedback request

I figured by now since some members have taking delivery of their 2012 Overland 4x4 HEMI's would some some feedback to report with how the new tranny and torque converter feels compared to the 2011. Can some of you that have taken delivery pass along some noticeable notes on the tranny difference that you have experienced?

I'm still on the fence whether I wait out my 2012 order or just pickup an leftover 2011 and get the ELSD which sounds like is now not included with the Overland 4x4 V8 for 2012.

Um, there is not difference int he transmission as it is the same as the 2011, just reprogrammed. The latest Hemi TSB will give you the 2012 features as a software update. Read the other threads about it.

I disagree. Nothing in the other threads have convinced me that the transmissions are the same. A 2012 owner just showed a photo of his EVIC showing gear 6 and my updated 2011 still says 5. At cruising speeds in town, there is no RPM change on mine switching between D to 5 to D. I've tried this again yesterday up to 75 km/hr and no RPM change as others have suggested.

I just purchased a June 2011 build Overland Hemi yesterday. Last night I played around with the the transmission shifting. At speeds over 62 mph if I shift from D to 5 I get an RPM increase. Don't try this when going uphill or you will already be in the lower gear.

I haven't driven a 2012 but for the 100 miles I have driven my 2011 I am thrilled with the transmission.

I guess a good question would be at speeds around say 65 mph what RPM is the 2012 V8 6 speed doing compared to the 2011. That would tell use if maybe the gearing is possibly a little different at least on the high end. Hopefully, the few people on here that did get their 2012's will commit on this topic. It would help me make my decision about dropping my order and getting a leftover or just waiting it out for the 2012.

There is a change in RPM between D and 5 no matter which way you shift with the TSB applied when your speed is at highway speeds. Why are you testing at speeds below 50 MPH that is not highway speed? This is along the same lines as when the 2000 45RFE got flashed to the 545 RFE.

It should't matter what speed I'm going. A change in gear should change RPM. That happens in my in my 6 spd manual car.

You might only be in 5th gear at 60 mph. So when you are in automatic mode and it say D but you are at a speed lower than when D is used and actually in 5, shifting over to 5 keeps you in 5 so rpm would not change.

I don't think you can correlate a manual transmission (where you know for sure what gear set is selected) to what the 45RFE, 545RFe or, what is it now, 645RFE?... with all their over drives and under drive combinations. The transmission/computer seems to indicate 5 for a couple different ratios.

My early May 2011 model does increase rpms by about 2-300 when taping out of D to 5 at about 70mph. If I recall went from something like 2400 rpm to 2700 rpm.

Hmmm... maybe that was the real reason for the 1 May price increase, they started installing 6 speeds :).... I jest of course.

Is is a very valid question on whether the 2012 transmission runs better/worse than the 2011 up to date with TSBs, however... regardless of the marketing.

It would be nice to hear how the 2012 operators manual describes the 6 speed operation.

Don't know why Jeep uses this stupid "Range Select" instead of a true manual mode where 5 on the display means its in 5th or at least have the display show the current gear which many cars do even in auto.

Also, when you goto D to 5 -- MDS turns off, You'll can get a lil roar and a rpm blip sometimes when this happens.

I can't believe the months of hype over the new "6 Speed" was essentially marketing BS. Jeep should be ashamed that they are duping people into thinking it is a new transmission. You get a SLIGHTLY modified ratio for second gear.... big deal.
