2010 - Backup camera displays no image

Just got our 2010 WK on Friday and the backup camera display Is just black with the warning message about looking at your surroundings.

It is under warranty but I am a do it myself kind of guy and would like to be able to correct future problems.

Does anyone have any recommendations of where to start troubleshooting?

Camera is clean and unobstructed.

Thanks in advance guys!!

No one has any thoughts?

Where does the camera connect? Is it to a module somewhere in the rear hatch area or does it wire direct and then plug in at the back of the MyGig?

Thanks for any light you guys can shine on this. I've searched and looked around, I'm very familiar with how forums work.

wkjeeps had this http://wkjeeps.com/wk_parkview_camera.htm I didn't see any troubleshooting info though. It does go and plug into your "mygig", maybe a loose connection there?

Id pull the headunit first and rule out the connection, cause then ya gotta start tearing at the wiring to make sure it didnt get opened up somewhere and short out. But wait... your under warranty, just take it back and have the fix it

Thank you both for the replies. I was beginning to think that with near 50 views I did something wrong as a newb. LOL!

I'll go pull the head unit and see what things look like back there.

I could take it to the dealer, but then I learned nothing and was without the car for a couple days. ;)

If they tell you thats gonna take a few days they are morons, tell them... well actually INSIST that they do it while you wait. Dont take their shit, they assume everyone an idiot and that they are god. Dont listen to anything they say, tell THEM what to do, its YOUR car. Tell them you just bought it and that you want it fixed quickly. End of story. Dont take no for an answer, and dont believe them if they say they are booked full, they arnt.

Ha ha! I appreciate the input! :)

I'm actually a vendor on the JK sites, so it's just in my blood to want to tear this thing apart and see how it works. Know what I mean? :D

Usually on a new vehicle when something electrical does not work one of two things have happened. The connector behind the radio has a bent pin that is not making connection or a backed out pin that was not retained by the connector housing. In some cases the pin is not crimped onto the wire tight. I have seen the pins crimped to the wire insulation and not the bare wire. The second problem that may be your problem is a bad camera unit or the camera harness not plugged in. If you want to try and fix this yourself have your dealer run printouts of the wiring locations and connector locations. It may not be wired direct to the camera, it may share other harness with other devices. The camera may also be part of the can network something like your computer lan network at work or home. I have worked at a car dealership for over 38 years and not all of us are the bad guys. If you explain your problem they may be happy to steer you in the right direction.

I agree, some dealers are great, and some service techs are great, but its the reps that are terrible and give everyone a bad rep, never have I been to a dealer and not left pissed off. My father just got a 2010 STS and paid over 50 grand, the scratched the front bumper during delivery and wont fix it, they keep saying they will replace the bumper cover so he drops it off for days at a time and all they do is try and fill it with touch up paint, hes getting fed up, they treat everyone like a fool.

Crestwood Sorry to hear about your bad treatment at the dealership. One bad apple does cause problems and in the case of car dealerships the whole system is broken. We at the dealers are some of the most under paid people in the work place. The factory has not made or cares how the support people at the dealers are paid. In most cases they could make more money waiting tables at your local hangout. That causes the workers to in some cases to not focus on the customers needs and understand that they just spent 50 grand on a new car. A good owner operator will work close with his workers to make sure that you the customer are happy. But this kind of dealer is few and far between in this day and time. The owner is usually to worried in how his golf game is going to go to care about Mr. Smith new car. And If you don't pay your support staff a fair wage they just may not care either. I have always tried to put myself in the customers shoes and treat them like I had just bought the new car. I have also run into my share of mean customers that start out mad , and just know you are going to give them them the shaft before you even try to help them. The road goes both ways. The customer should start out with the service writer / manager and then the owner or general manager in that order. If you can not get the problem fixed then contact the factory or try another dealer in your area. Dealers are just now starting to use Facebook and other social media to see what people are saying about them. It might be a good way for the customer to let the world how the dealer helped them or didnt help them.
