01 GC Limited reverse
I have a 2001 GC Limited, V8 Quadra-Drive with 145k miles. Last week i noticed reverse acting funny. At first, it felt similar to wheel spin and there was vibration coming from the rear. It got progressively worse, and now will not move in reverse unless I hit the gas. Once it finally catches, it feels like the rear end is going to fall out. In drive, going forward, the tranny shifts perfectly normal no issues at all. Anyone know what's going on with this thing?
Basically reverse is like neutral, but once it finally catches and starts moving, it vibrates violently and feels like the rear end is going to fall out.

Re: 01 GC Limited reverse
Did you check for any stored faults in the PCM doing the key dance?
Can you freely move the rear wheels in reverse direction after jacking up the rear or moving the whole car rearwards? Because this could be tranny related, but also be a problem in the rear diff or even rear brakes.

Re: 01 GC Limited reverse
If the problem was in the tranny (slipping clutch for example), there should be a fault set. So i would suspect something wrong with the diff or brakes. Did you try to turn the wheels by hand in reverse direction? Did you check the rear diff fluid for metal flakes?

Re: 01 GC Limited reverse
Haven't checked that yet, I will put it on the lift at work tomorow and see what i come up with. Codes is the first thing i checked by key dance. It showed nothing so i used my friends OBDII scanner just to make sure and still none.

Re: 01 GC Limited reverse
You could first try to push the jeep backwards by hand, to see if its free to roll. With the description of the complaint you gave it almost looks that one or both rear wheels are locked in reverse (maybe parking brake shoe problem). Would not suspect the Vari-Loc in the rear diff as the problem, because when it would lock, it would connect both wheels together and not cause a problem to back off. Never heard of this problem before.
