WK 5.7 Transmission Grind/Clunk

Here's how it all started:

My uncle and my cousin met my father and I up at Lowes. After we were down getting some things my dad asked if he could drive my Jeep.

So my dad gives my uncle the keys to my Jeep. (My uncle previously owned a 06 WK). They get into the Jeep, and I hear him start it up...then I hear it revving up (I'm in my cousins car parked 15 feet next to it) and I look over and I see my Jeep launch 5-10 Feet and he slams on my brakes. I got really pissed that it happened, but I couldn't do anything. So we all meet up at the house.

An hour later I wanted to go fill up for gas, so my cousin and I went to go fill up and when I put it into Reverse it didn't make any noise, but then when I put it into DRIVEyou hear grinding and then a clunk and the whole Jeep moves. You can feel and hear it. It's pretty loud and noticable. Guy at the gas station heard it also.

I haven't done any transmission service to it lately. But that's first on my list along with the Differentials. T-Case Fluid is new since last year.

I'm thinking hopefully its the U-Joint and not the Transmission.

It NEVER did this before my uncle drove it. No noise, nothing!

I'm taking it to the mechanic hopefully on Tuesday. This will delay me for my nice upgrades that I had planned for my Jeep. :(
I need some help guys! Thanks!

****I just took it to the Dealership and I need 3 NEW Front Differential Mount Bushings****

Did your uncle maybe first push the accelerator and then put the selector in D?

My Father said that my uncle accidentally pressed both Brake and Gas at the same TIME! It's still making the noise. Maybe the Drive Shaft or U-Joint I hope!

sounds to me like your uncle ment to go to drive but he went to neutral by accident and he was putting his foot on the gas (that's why you herd it rev) then he figured out it was in neutral and while it had high rpms (witch he probably didn't realize), he switched it to drive and it shot up forward...question is when you herd/saw him shoot up 10 ft..did u hear the car jerk up, when i say jerk up i mean like the tire screech for a second as it pulled off or anything like that? only asking because ive done it a few times by accident. ive also put my foot on the break and hit the gas then let go and yeah it will jerk up a bit but..if he did the neutral drive in a decent rpm range, it will go a lot harder and faster..if he did...that could seriously EFF up ur transmission. good luck bro hope its not the tranny

Yes^^^That's what I saw. The Jeep's wheel screeched for a second as if pulled off. I should've said that in my first post.

I'm going to take it to my Mechanic. I'm guessing he messed up the U-Joint. I know I've said this twice. I'm going to check the Drive Shaft to see if it has any play.

***EDIT***Transmission Shifts fine and there's nothing different with it. Only when I shift it into Drive is when I hear that grinding or creaking then clunk sound.

I'm always careful, but it seems like he just was wasn't paying attention.

I'm going to post up a video after Class tomorrow if I have time. If not I'll do it after.

Stuffed the valve body I'd reckon. Goes without saying that the gearbox shouldn't be treated like that.

yep he went from neutral to drive in high rpms. take care of your gearbox...ppl don't realize how going from neutral to drive in high rpms can mess up or even TOAST ur tranny..to much pressure and it breaks like an egg

ABSOLUTELY NOT ! lol, if anything just put ur foot on the break hit the gas to 4 - 5 k rpm and let go of the break..thats the safest launch you could do

Re: WK 5.7 Transmission Grind/Clunk

you get a 4-5k rpm stall on your converter? I would say its time for a new converter... off the top of my head I wanna say stock stall is in the neighborhood of 2k rpms +/-.
