OnStar FMV install on wk2

Now that OnStar offers the For My Vehicle set-up for various vehicles including the wk2, has anyone tried this? Apparently it's a mirror replacement.

After two Escalades, I miss the security that comes with the OnStar system, especially as I am a long distance driver.

It's available through BestBuy at $399 plus $18/mo, the monthly being the same as GM vehicles.

Any thoughts?

Onstar seems to be a novelty item IMO

When I had it and tried to use the 911 button, the phone just kept ringing and ringing. When I wanted them to navigate me someplace, they kept on having to "reload" their maps to find where I was at.

Was this in your 2011 wk2?

I'd kind of like to know more about what works and what doesn't with this in a 2011 GC. Anyone?

I can't see replacing the mirror in my Wk2, especially for onstar. The WK2 mirror (on higher trim levels, at least) has light sensors and other tech which would not integrate well with an aftermarket mirror.

I personally don't see Onstar as a necessity, as I don't think relying on cell service makes sense. The only thing Onstar has going for it is using 3 watts of power rather than normal cell phones which are less that 1 watt. This gives much better range, but it is STILL cellular based.

AACN seems to be the best selling point, but how does the FMV integrate into your jeep's sensors? or is it all internal in the vehicle?

Onstar is more of a novelty IMO. When we had it, it was fun for restaurant reservations, but the one time we really needed it (pre-GPS) lost in CT it was "down" for the day. They gave us one day credit!
