Coffee mug dilema
Driving into work today I brought a cup of coffee in a mug. The mug has a flute or wine glass type of bottom. I put it in the middle cup holder and went on my way.

At a stop light I reached down to pick up the cup - it wouldn’t move! It was locked in the holder. The spring retractors/clips in the cup holder fit perfectly into the narrowed portion of the mug and they would not retract - they only retract with force from above.

I looked down at my steaming coffee and couldn’t believe it - I even laughed out loud of the situation - I needed a straw. If it tried to pull it out I may break a tab and spill the coffee all over the console and - for sure - on my lap.

I pulled over and finally managed to fit two fingers along the mug side to push two clips in enough to get the mug out. Now what do I do with it? Can’t put it back full - so I drank it - and put the empty mug back in the cup holder - to be retrieved at home.

I guess this is why they test systems and appliances with real users - don’t know if they thought of this scenario when the holder was designed. Now - how many of you will get a similar mug/cup and try it on your vehicle….

Re: Coffee mug dilema
Real coffee mugs don't have flutes. Just sayin.

Re: Coffee mug dilema
Now you tell me - just grabbed any "mug" from the cupboard, poured the coffee and left for work.

I have the same issue with gatorade bottles (or similar). Their botthe design "locks" into the tension clips on the cup holder. Such is life.

Re: Coffee mug dilema
That's a real old style mug... from before built in cup holders. It came with an adhesive backed disk with slots on either side of the top into which the flutes slide. The idea was to stick it to the top of the dashboard. Time to deep six it.

Re: Coffee mug dilema
I removed the retention clips from the front-most cup holder. It's nice having one cup holder without them.

Re: Coffee mug dilema
Its a sad sad day when a cup holder actually retains its cups ;)

Re: Coffee mug dilema
OK - I know where this is going. You think this is a minor frivolous thing, BUT just wait till yours gets stuck and you REALLY want a sip of hot, delicious coffee.

I'm not putting the mug back in the holder because:

It would not release the mug so I had to:
- get to it from the undercarriage;
- took off all the shields and protection plates;
- removed the transmission - this was a pain;
- took out the wiring harness as there wasn't enough slack to move it to the side;
- disconnected all the shifter linkages;
- had to cut through the center console with a oxyacetylene torch (burned myself badly)
- cut the plastic bottom of the console cup holder (below the mug);
- used forceps to retract the spring clips;
- pushed the cup up and out;
- used a wet vac to slurp up the spilled coffee;
- removed the interior carpet and took to a professional cleaner to get the coffee stains out;
- gave the mug to the dog to chew;
- tonight I'll put it all back together again.

Took my wife's Acura into work today - no retainer clips - coffee was consumed!

Just a warning to everyone out there.

If your cup is stuck, let me know and I'll come over and help you get it out....

Re: Coffee mug dilema

Any suggestions how to get my right HAND extracted from the cup holder. I was reaching in to grab 14 cents from the bottom of the holder and now my hand is totally stuck.

I have all tools/torch as noted in your excellent instructions, but I cannot get out of my Jeep.

Can you post some PICS so my wife can see to help me out?? Or, maybe you can drive down to New Hampshire from Ottawa, I'll pay for your beer. ;)

I'll be there on Friday - barring any road washouts. Don't want to post pics and give away my secrets!

I did forget to mention that the first step was the consume LOTS of beer (St Pauli Girl and Blue Moon).

I knew someone would need my assistance - Maybe I could start a business of helping other WK2 owners solve unsolvable problems. $$$$
