Did anyone try the Audi Q5?

I know it's smaller and not off road, but it's my other consideration and I don't need a Jeep, just like the looks and luxury! Did anyone also try the Q5? Why did you go with the Jeep (non off road reasons). Thank you!

Re: Did anyone try the Audi Q5?

I've looked at Audis before, almost picked up an A8 a few years ago. The thing that caught me on them was maintenance $$$. A simple timing belt, a fix that was a couple hundred in my BMW, cost $800-1,000, just for the part...

That's just one example. I figure, if a car can make BMW look cheap on repairs/maintenance, I'll skip it. That said, they drive very nice. A friend just picked up a used Q7, and she's a very slick ride.

Re: Did anyone try the Audi Q5?

I´ve got a WK2 as my first Jeep now.
My dad had three Audi A6 and one Audi Allroad. And I have tried the Q7.

Here where I live, I can´t even compare the WK2 and the more expensive Q5. They are in too different price ranges. And IF they happened to cost the same, today I would go for the Jeep without thinking too much.
The repair cost of my father Audis were a joke. Particularly with the Allroad, I remember the feeling we used to have, like they were stealing us in each visit to the dealer.
And besides, the Q5 seems to be more like a lady´s car (my opinion of course).

Well, I am a lady ....with a kid on the way.... not worried about my macho image too much, lol. My husband is obviously secure with his sexuality (or a closet case!)as we have a Rav4 and an Audi TT at the moment. I actually was just trying the Jeep because the dealer is 5 minutes away but it surprised me with how luxurious and smooth it was. So now I am pretty set on the Jeep but have so many questions as the dealer employee was incredibly uneducated and unhelpful.

Re: Did anyone try the Audi Q5?

I used to own two Audis before buying my first JGC. The Q5 and JGC are totally two different vehicles. In fact, you can probably stick a Q5 instead a JGC. I test drove both and at the end both were within $1,000 of each other. What swung me to a Jeep thus leaving the Audi brand after many years is the fact I'm so so bored of the German design. Yeah, laugh I know. They are too perfect, too clean and the Q5 did not look as sporty as the JGC. The Q7 was way too big and too expensive.

But other than the above, I went with the JGC because:
A. It had so much more room. Both my boys thought it had the most room for them in the back.
B. Q5 and Audis are noisy. You will notice the difference. The JGC is the quietest vehicle I have ever driven and I've also owned an X5.
C. Given that they are both priced relatively the same, the JGC had more features if you compared a fully loaded JGC to a fully loaded Audi.
D. All German cars have the worst Navigation system. You would be paying triple the price for their NAV system which comes standard with the JGC or Overland at least.
E. I never enjoyed BMW/Audi's AWD/FWD systems (terrible in the snow). So, I gave up on it and thought let's give Jeep a try. As I've said in previous threads, I drove a Honda CRV before my X5 and I never once paid attention to how slick the roads were with all season tires. But, with the X5 or Audis, even with snow tires, I was always aware of the road condition. Yeah, very odd feeling.

Overall, I just found the JGC a much sexier and sportier car. I don't give a you know what for all this power this, engine that B.S., I go for the looks. I don't care how fast it goes or how much it can tow or whether it can go over a 20 ft. boulder, if it looks ugly I'm not driving one.

Our family hauler before the Jeep was an Audi Q7. While the vehicle was in for the 35k maintenance, I had a Q5 2.0T for 4 days. I really liked it. It uses the same platform as the current A4. Very good passenger space and surprising amount of room in the cargo area. The AWD system is very good and fit and finish is top-notch. The one downside, it is a hot seller. Therefore dealers will be less likely to offer a discount. However the dealer service could be far better vs. a Chrysler/Jeep dealer.

For my wife we strongly considered the Q5 but ended up with the A4. But lack of availability and better discounting on the A4 weighed in on our decision.

While a Jeep GC and Q5 are SUV's, they are completely different in their goals. The former is better for off-road, towing and does have a more advanced 4WD system (with the QD II). The Q5 offers better refinement, luxury and fuel economy. Do yourself a favor and test drive both, on the same day, before making a decision.

The q5 is nice. Personally, i think the wk2 has more value for the money.

Re: Did anyone try the Audi Q5?

Parents picked up the Q5 about 8-12 months ago. She loves it and I like driving it when Im not in my WJ. If you want a faster more sport car handling crossover then go for the Q5 if you want a more truckish like feel and power for towing offroading etc for for the WK2. There is a ton of room in the Q5 i must say. The only downfall of the Q5 is that I feel the car is a little sluggish if you dont drive it in sport.

Flashy,

First and foremost, best wishes on your new one.

Second, here is a prior thread that may help you on the debate: http://www.jeepgarage.org/f73/wk2-overland-vs-audi-q5-16216.html

Third, since you got the Audi TT and a RAV4, you owe it to both you and your husband to get a real vehicle. FWIW, I was a prior Audi fan and had four of 'em plus a Touareg. Get the WK2 Jeep.

Cheers

Thanks. I have driven both and I like them for different reasons. The q5 is quick and fun and sporty and a little more rare. Plus I can get a great deal on it - but it's still more $$ than a JGC to get it the way I want.

Interesting to hear the Q5 is considered loud. I didn't notice it, but I do like quiet cars. The cost of repair is much higher with the Audi (but at least I get a free loaner car and cappucino from the dealer!). The tow capacity is not bad - 4400 lbs - and I do tow quite a bit.

Do you think the Audi is good looking? I find it a bit boring, but everyone I ask think it's superb looking.

Re: Did anyone try the Audi Q5?

I do like the styling but it can be a bit plain without the S Line package. I don't recall if the S Line comes standard with performance (i.e. summer only) tires. If so, you will need to invest in a winter rim/tire setup.

I didn't find the Q5 to be loud. If you opt for the 3.2 version, watch the packages as the pricing can escalate quickly (say north of $50k). I don't have a feel for MY12 buy levels for a JGC Overland but let's estimate $41-43k depending on actual equipment. This is where the "value" of the Jeep shines considering equipment content and all-around capability.

The JGC would serve you better for towing. You may want to look at the BMW X3 with the 3.5i engine. I believe it is in the same price range as the Q5 but, in my opinion, has a better powertrain.

I agree with the earlier post on the Q5, put the transmission in sport mode. It does make a big difference in throttle response.

If I had go through the buying process again I would still pick the JGC Overland. While far from perfect (few vehicles are), it does check off enough of the boxes for me to commit my $$$. Price not being a consideration, it would've been an X5 diesel or 5.0i.

Please let us know of your decision. Hopefully we will be welcoming you to the Jeep family.

i would dispute both of these things. Audi MMI on newer models is fantastic. i've taken my audis into some of the worst snow conditions in the world without issue.
