My Service Contract: Worth it or Rip off?

I purchase my 2012 Overland about three weeks ago and was talked in to purchasing the Service Contract for 36 mo/48k mi. I paid $870.

After receiving the paperwork, this is what's included:

12 Oil changes, filter, lube
6 Tire rotations and top off of engine fluids
3 A/C filter replacements and inspections for brake linings, CV joints, exhaust system, and front suspension
1 Replacement of engine air filter and spark plugs (HEMI)

The plan is transferable and I can use it at any authorized dealer. However, I can also cancel it within 60 days for full refund. Your thoughts?

Well figure 12 oil changes at $50 for synthetic and filter is $600. 3 cabin air filters at I believe $30 is $90. 6 true rotations at about $20. Is another $120. 1 air filter at $25 brings us to about $845. Also Jeep recommends 8k mile intervals for oil changes so that's only 6 changes in 48k miles. Not worth it in my opinion.

Doesn't look like you added up the spark plugs. Any idea on the the cost for that replacement? Oh yeah, the service contract also states that the oil change caps at $30. WTF?

Jeremy all that means is that Chrysler will only pay the dealership $30 for the oil change regardless of how much they normally charge. If their oil changes are $49.99, they only get paid $30 by Chrysler and you don't pay any difference. This is the way their Service Contracts work.

Forgot the spark plugs. I don't know how much they cost but Jeep recommends they be replaced at 64000 miles.

My service contract specifically states "Replace spark plugs - 5.7L engine" for the 24 mo/28,00 mi service.

The dealer actually threw this package in on my deal when we were negotiating over the last couple of dollars.

I wouldn't have paid $870.00. You are basically paying in advance for three years of service with no significant discount. The only way I pay up front for anything is if there is a decent reduction in the total price. There is not in this case.
Plus, you are losing the opportunity cost on your money, albeit a fairly small amount of money.

If the dealer lets you return it, I would take them up on that and pay for service as you go.

Jeremy,

Replacing Hemi spark plugs (16 of them) would have cost you about $230. So yes it is a fair deal.

You already bought the vehicle but you could negotiate a better deal since you can cancel in 60 days. I negotiated as part of my deal to pay $1380 for a 5yr/96k Scheduled Maintenance Care Plus package. That's oil changes at 3,000 miles and includes ALL maintenance per the book for up to 5 years or 96,000 miles (whichever comes first). This was a steal in my opinion since I bought the Chrysler Lifetime Maxcare $100 deductible warranty for $1830 and you are required to do all the maintenance so you never get screwed down the road. You can do better. If you want a service contract, negotiate the Chrysler Scheduled Maintenance Care Plus. There was another member on here that got the same thing I did for $1395.

I would get the money back if I was you.
