Is Jeep Having Hard Time Supplying Parts

Well I am now going on day 7 without my Jeep and the dealership just called to tell me they are still waiting for the intermediate shaft to repair the harsh ride/shudder/bump TSB that is out. They said the part won't be in until the 20th (another 8 days).

They've got me in a rental avenger (not quite up to Grand Cherokee standards) so I can't complain too much. My question is what is with these parts delays? 2 weeks seems a bit excessive, especially for an existing TSB issue. Jeep should have these parts stocked up and ready to go IMHO. The dealership also said that he has 4 other Jeeps in the shop waiting on parts right now.

Had some repairs done on our 1994 Grand a few weeks back before getting a 2012 Overland last week. It took two weeks to get two parts, and raises the question as to whether the lag is with in-production models or with Chrysler's parts system as a whole.

I'm in Omaha. Which dealer? And what do you think of them?

I just got back from the dealer and for the intermediate shaft fix for a tsb the part is on back order. The dealer stated that it is so new supply is scarce right now.....oh well

Performance over in LaVista. That's where I bought the Jeep and have been doing service. They've been great to work with so far. I'd definitely recommend them to anyone in town. They've always been honest and straightforward with me (i.e. - telling me they are having parts issues rather than making up some story) and willing to track a problem down and get the work done. Service department has great hours too.

(I'm starting to sound like a commercial for them or something LOL)

There's a number of factors, but the short answer is yes, there is a general parts shortage.

These are very popular vehicles, so all available parts end up going to the assembly line first with not many left over.

With some of these TSBs just now coming out and issues getting fixed, there's a pretty large demand for what few parts are left over after the factory gets theirs.

Manufacturers have been seriously cutting back on the parts inventories they carry (it costs money to keep something on the shelf), so there just aren't the mountains of parts sitting in warehouses waiting on demand. With the further economic woes, it seems like nobody is willing to take the financial risk that you get when you produce more than you absolutely have to have.

It took two weeks or so for me to get the pair of A/C refrigerant lines to fix the high pitched squeal, and that's with a quoted 3-5 day time to get them.

I'm really hoping I don't get into an accident (not that I usually hope for that). If that would happen, I wouldn't be shocked for the thing to sit there for a week waiting on the needed parts for repair.

Why are you in a rental? You could just drive your jeep and take it in when the part arrives.

Those may not have been OEM parts. I can't get any Chrysler OEM parts for my 1993 Grand Caravan. Everything comes from an aftermarket vendor or a junk yard.

That is a good question that I asked them today that I don't have an answer for. I had the Jeep in for multiple maintenance items last week and each day they thought the part was coming in and when it didn't they just said 'keep the car another day". When it was just being pushed off a day at a time I didn't mind. It was more of a hassle to take the car back and switch out than it was worth but now that the estimated delivery of the part isn't until the 23rd (that's the new date) I asked to just get the car back and then bring it in when it does show up. They've got 4 Jeeps in right now waiting for the part. I guess they are coming in from Canada or something as well so I'm sure that customs doesn't help matters much. Hopefully I'll have her back tomorrow and play the waiting game.

Who knows when that magical unicorn will appear with all the missing I-shafts.

Re: Is Jeep Having Hard Time Supplying Parts

When I ordered my '11 WK2 back in April, the dealer indicated that certain paint colors, along with certain parts where in scarce supply due to the earthquake in Japan. Apparently, a lot of the components that are used in the various subsystems on these vehicles are/were on back order, which may be part of the problem.

I also suspect the accountants have something to blame for parts shortages, however. Chrysler is still recovering from bankruptcy and new owners, and I suspect a lot of pressure has been placed on inventory and supply chain management in the process...

Well, yeah. The thing is almost 20 years old, of course there aren't any OEM parts available for it anymore. I'd almost be surprised if there were.

At some point manufacturers have to quit supporting old products or else they'd spend themselves into oblivion trying to keep a production line open for parts that have tiny demand.

For the WK2, the aftermarket isn't even remotely close to picking up the slack... most everything out there save disposable maintenance items like filters or Hemi-specific items are going to be OEM.

They were (or were listed as) OEM parts and it was a Jeep dealer. True, some parts for that series have been impossible to obtain for a few years, now -- one reason we finally decided to sell the '94, which thankfully went to a good home.
