Vibration at 68 to 73 mph
 
I have had this very slight vibration at this speed off and on since I have had this Overland. Its just a slight shimmy in the wheel. Its not there all the time. It has done it with different tires Although I had 18's on for a few days and it did not do it with those from what I could tell. It seems to be just something about the 20's. Do others with an Overland notice this?

i just went through this on my 2011 new dodge ram with 20's is this a new vehicle have the dealer take the air out break the bead and rotate them 180 degrees rebalance and fill and roadtest, we went switching tires and rims 3 times and 1 set of brand new michelin latitudes and it still did it until we broke them down and did the 180 degree finally cured the problem

my aftermarket 20s did the same. Just had them rebalanced and tested at the higher speeds and all is good now, no vibrations at those speeds.

I have the same problem. I had the tires rebalanced (road balanced) and it still does the exact same thing with no change. The dealer had me jump in three other Jeeps with the 20" wheels and they all did the same exact thing.

My dealer is willing to fix the issue but they don't know what the solution is. I'd like to hear if breaking the bead and rotating 180* does the trick but I'm not sure how that changes anything. What does rotating 180* do?

I would say nothing. Maybe the chassis and steering geometry is just to sensitive as I have the same problem with WK2 and 18's from brand new. Dealer said the tire pressure was to low. However still does it. Makes you wonder if they test drove it at all. :slapfight:

My Overland with the 20" wheels is okay, but I had this same problem with my Charger SRT-8. I had the tires load balanced, which helped, but the vibration returned. It turned out to be a Goodyear tire issue. I replaced the Goodyears with a second set, but the vibration remained. I finally replaced the tires with another brand and the vibration went away for good. This seemed to be a common problem with 20" SRT-8 wheels & tires. Some said they got rid of the vibration by replacing the front tie rods. I did that, but the vibration was still there until I changed the tire brand.

Rotational force variation!
 
1)It has a numeric value which can be measured and ameliorated by Hunter balancing machines.
2) GM sent out a tsb about it about 20 yrs ago. My mechanic showed it to me and that's how I know about it.
3) It involves vibrational force generated by the tire and wheel NOT being perfectly round.
4) Because it goes to the heart of their quality control, tire and wheel manufacturers don't like to talk about it. A BRAND NEW wheel or tire can be terminally defective secondary to this condition.
5) Rotating the tire 180 degrees tries to match the variances in the wheel and tire to minimize the condition. This is what the Hunter machines try to do, BUT the machine CANNOT compensate for tires and wheels that r too far out.

To show you what I'm talking about, let's say you order a set of wheels from tirerack or a local dealer. You get em, you have the will to get them on a Hunter machine to check RIM RUNOUT and one of them is out of whack. Now what? It is time, money, and hassle for everyone downstream from the manufacturer.
And tires? I never heard of measuring runout on an unmounted tire but the concept still sure applies.
I order good quality wheels and TELL THEM I am going to check them. I order Michelins because they have the best quality control. THEN I watch them being mounted to check the RTV value the machine gives and if it is above the acceptable range, change the tire.
Is this all a moumental hassle? Of course!!! But this is what you have to do because manufacturers don't want to spend TIME AND MONEY on QUALITY CONTROL. So they ship shit!!! And u live with the vibes!

That is a good explanation though I'm not sure my dealer will bite on this approach. It seems odd that every JGC on the lot has tires mounted 180* out of phase.

Ask your dealer to do the Intermediate shaft tsb 19-004-11 and see if that takes care fo the problem. slop in a intermdiate shaft can cause a vibration.

Ok. So I took my WK2 to my local tire and wheel guy to check on the balance and also to do a visual on the tires. One of the front wheels had 270 grams on the outboard side of the rim and was still 50 grams off balance. They rotated the tire on the rim 180 degrees and striped of the old weights and rebalanced it with 40 on the outer and 10 grams on the inner side. Moved it to the back and checked the other rims with some minor rebalancing done....Test drive .....PERFECT...The question is why do I have to pay $80.00 to get this done properly when the dealer could not? James Frisels have some talking to do when I see them tomorrow. :confused:

I also have a vibration at these speeds but haven't done anything about it yet. Sigh.
