Quadra-Drive System-Affected with differing tire diameters?
 System If Equipped

The optional Quadra-Drive

 System features three

torque transfer couplings. The couplings include ELSD
(Electronic Limited Slip Differential) front and rear axles
and Quadra-Trac II

 transfer case. The optional ELSD

axles are fully automatic and require no driver input to
operate. Under normal driving conditions the units function
as standard axles balancing torque evenly between
left and right wheels. With a traction difference between
left and right wheels the coupling will sense a speed
difference. As one wheel begins to spin faster than the
other, torque will automatically transfer from the wheel
that has less traction to the wheel that has traction. While
the transfer case and axle couplings differ in design, their
operation is similar. Follow the Quadra-Trac II

case shifting information, preceding this section, for

shifting this system." I am fortunate to have this system in ,my 2005 WK Limited Hemi 5.7 but am concerned for the following reason. The Jeep has three used tires at 77k miles and a new one within the last 8K miles prior to the 77K total. Due to the drive tain/tramsmission sophistication, should I not be running the similar diameter tires? The specs are the same but surely the overall diameters have to be different due to mileage alone. Much about nothing, or should I change the remaining tires to new spec. and not have to worry about "strains" to the transfer case when uneven diameter tires are used? Interested in everyone's take. Thanks.

Re: Quadra-Drive System-Affected with differing tire diameters?
different size tires can damage the system

Re: Quadra-Drive System-Affected with differing tire diameters?
many owners ahve used staggered wheels/tires with no problems

Re: Quadra-Drive System-Affected with differing tire diameters?
While the tires should be the same size( diameter) there seems to be some leeway . I'm not sure what the limit is,but there is definately NO need to be concerned just because a tire is newer than the others, now if it was a diffrent size, you could have a issue

Re: Quadra-Drive System-Affected with differing tire diameters?
There was a lengthy discussion on this topic elsewhere recently. From all the info presented, it is not recommended to run any more than 1/8th of an inch difference between treads. Obviously you won't have an instant failure or even any immediate consequenses. The consensus was that it will cause undue strain on the system that will shorten the life span.

If you go to almost any online tire site you will find similar info regarding full time 4 wheel drive systems.

I know the newer QD2 system isn't as touchy as the original QD system in my old WJ but they still have minimal tolerances for differences in tire size.
