Blend doors?

So on the way home tonight my wife was complaining of being cold while I was feeling a nice warm breeze coming from the vents. I reach over and sure enough the passenger side is blowing cool air. I am guessing I just got bit by the blend door bug? I guess time to read up on what it takes to fix them.

Re: Blend doors?

I would start checking for any fault code set: Press the AC and recirc buttons at the same time and while holding them, turn the left hand temp selector one detent clockwise. A fault code will be shown, or 00 when all ok. You could eventually try a reset of the system by disconnecting the negative battery cable for some minutes and see how it works. (if the problem is the blend door itself, you will probably get code 24 (for an existing fault) or 56 (for a historical fault). Both mean: right temperature door travel too large)
You could also try to calibrate the system:
1. Turn the ignition on. 2. Set the HVAC to auto. 3. Turn the ignition off. 4. Remove IOD fuse. (its in the power distribution center under the hood, fuse 15) .Wait 90 seconds before reinstalling. 5. Start the vehicle. You will hear sound of the doors moving. 6. Do not touch any of the AZC controls for at least one minute to allow the calibration function to run to completion. This forces the system into recalibrating the full open and full closed positions of the doors.

Re: Blend doors?

Ok, before doing anything I got 2 codes (thanks by the way to frango for the diagnostic info):

14 = AI (Recirc) motor not responding
56 = Right temperature door travel too large

After pulling the battery for about 20 min I now get heat on both sides, but I have the following 3 codes:

14 = AI (Recirc) motor not responding
19 = AI (Recirc) door travel too small
24 = Right temperature door travel too large

This seems conflicting to me, but seems to lead me to 2 conclusions. Either the actuator is bad and not moving properly, or the door is stuck and the actuator cant move.

Anybody have similar faults?

Re: Blend doors?

Did you try the calibration as well, to be sure that the system will force all actuators to open and close limits:confused:.
It seems though that the recirculation door actuator isnīt responding at all.
You can control each actuator manually as well, to hear if its moving. To do this, you have to be in the "display fault code" mode and then turn the LH temperature selector knob until number 52 is displayed. Now press the AC or Recirc button and the actual position of the recirculation door will be shown (this value is the recirculation door target) . Now with the RH temperature knob you can change the target and the position of the recirculation door. If it doesnīt move at all (by sound), probably the actuator is shot or the door is blocked. Unfortunately you have to remove the whole instrument panel to get access to the recirculation door or actuator.
You can do the same thing for the passenger side blend door actuator, you only have to use number 42. The passenger side blend door actuator you can easily see when you remove the glove box. But a fault code 24 is normally a broken end stop of the blend door.
Quite some people decide to do an easy repair, where removing the whole instrument panel is not necessary, but you will end up with a single temperature control system.

Yes, but I did that before pulling the battery. I will try again to do the calibration. It was blowing warm air, but I did not try to change it to cold either. We will see what happens, thanks again Frank for your help

Re: Blend doors?

Really sounds like your blend doors have finally failed. They all eventually do.
You now will have to decide how to fix them, cut into the HVAC box thru the glove compartment door, or remove the entire dash and do it the right way.

Sorry for the bad news!

If you haven't ordered the blend doors yet don't until you check out JGCParts .com. I ordered my blend doors from them. They are made from machined aluminum. $150.00. Not the cheap ass plastic like the originals or replacement. If you go this rout don't follow their replacement video. Hackers 101.
