How-To: Add a Sub/Amp to your Factory Stereo
 
How to add a sub/amp to the factory stereo


To completely and successfully add a sub woofer and amplifier combination to the factory stereo you must;
  1. Interface with the factory radio (3 ways)
  2. Connect the amplifiers power wire with the vehicles battery
  3. Connect the amplifiers remote power wire to a positive lead that is triggered when the vehicle is started or radio is turned on
  4. Connect the amplifiers ground wire
  5. Connect the amplifier to the sub woofer(s)


Step 1

There are essentially 3 ways to interface an amplifier to the factory stereo.

Solution 1

The cheapest solution to get an audio signal from the factory radio to an aftermarket amplifier is a using high-level signal. This is your second best solution to interfacing with the factory stereo. This can only be done if your aftermarket amplifier has high-level signal inputs. Refer to your amplifiers manual to connect your high-level inputs. You will likely use four wires from a full range speaker(s); Right rear speaker (+), Right rear speaker (-), Left rear speaker (+), Left rear speaker (-). This will provide a full-range signal for your amplifier.

Factory Amplifier Installed

If you have a factory amplifier, then you will want to connect your high-level signal leads where the speaker outputs are. Use the audio pin-outs link below to figure out which color wire to interface with.

No Factory Amplifier Installed

If you do not have a factory amplifier installed, then you can either interface at each rear speaker and tap into the lead there, or you can interface with the speaker output wires at the receiver (recommended). Again, refer to the link below to figure out which color wires to interface with.

Solution 2

The next cheapest solution is to purchase a line output converter (2 channel for sub woofer amplifier), commonly referred to as a LOC, that will convert a high-level signal to a low-level, RCA signal that every amplifier has an input for. This is your least favorable solution to interface with the stereo, but certainly not a bad solution.
The LOC will have four wires that you’ll need to interface with; Right rear speaker (+), Right rear speaker (-), Left rear speaker (+), Left rear speaker (-). This will provide a full-range signal for your LOC.

Factory Amplifier Installed

If you have a factory amplifier, then you will want to connect your LOC there where the speaker outputs are. Use the audio pin-outs link below to figure out which color wire to interface with.

No Factory Amplifier Installed

If you do not have a factory amplifier installed, then you can either interface at each rear speaker and tap into the lead there, or you can interface with the speaker output wires at the receiver (recommended). Again, refer to the link below to figure out which color wires to interface with.

Solution 3

The most expensive, but easiest solution is to purchase a wiring adapter that will produce a pair of low-level, RCA pigtails located behind the factory radio. These typically run somewhere between $100-$120, but can make installation a lot easier. Use a site like www.crutchfield.com to figure out which adapter will fit your vehicle/radio.


Step 2

The aftermarket amplifier will require a run of power wire from the vehicles battery, located under the hood, to the aftermarket amplifier. Some Jeeps have a spare/unused grommet in the fire wall that can be used as a pass through for your power wire. If you do not have a spare grommet, you can piggyback through another grommet or drill a hole and make your own. In any case, be sure to seal the hole with silicone and if you drill your own hole, please purchase a grommet.


Step 3

The aftermarket amplifier will require the utilization of a remote power wire. This wire is the “trigger” wire; basically when this wire receives power, it “tells” the amplifier to turn on. Most LOC’s will have this wire built-in to the unit, which makes installation that much easier – simply connect a wire from that to the amplifiers remote wire location. Most wiring adapters also have a remote power wire – simply connect a wire from that to the amplifiers remote wire location. If you are using a high-level connection or a LOC that does not have a built-in remote power wire or a wiring adapter that does not have a built-in remote power wire, you can simply piggyback off of one of the speaker output wires that runs from either the receiver or the factory amplifier to any of the speakers in the vehicle.


Step 4

The aftermarket amplifier will require a run of ground wire that will run from a solid grounding location (usually a large bolt that is bolted into a large metal panel or the frame) and to the aftermarket amplifier. Be sure to sand down the grounding location well and use a wire that is the same or larger gauge as your power wire. Please note that the ground wire is equally important as the power wire and installation of it should not be overlooked. The ground is often the issue that most have when the amplifier does not work properly.


Step 5

Lastly, you’ll want to connect the amplifier to the aftermarket sub woofer. Be sure that you are using a proper implementation of wiring – either series or parallel – as this will affect how much power your sub woofer will receive.

haha, no pics. I wanted this to be more universal rather solely for a WK with the factory Boston system.

That said, if there are any of you guys that have a WK/Boston system I can take pics of every part of the process.

Matt,

What kind of LOC do you recommend? Where did you send the ground wire? Do you know what kind of screw is in the "C" Pillar? I removed the cap but didn't have a flashlight around and couldn't take it off.

I'm installing my old sub/amp right now but will be upgrading to new stuff in the near future. Did you run new wires to the speakers from the amp?
