Little Liftgate Light Mod

Sup all,
I had a hunting need, which caused this mod :) Basically, i needed a little more light projected from my liftgate so i can change into some hunting gear at 4am in the pitch black :)

Someone else on here did a mod using the same type of waterproof LED strip, so i cant take credit for the idea completely - thanks to whoever opened that door

Anywho, i started with the 40ft roll of weatherproof black LED (cut to your own length) tape:

I cut this to the width of the liftgate and applied right where the plastic hits the liftgate. Initially the tape is holding, but i might have to hit it with a little Gorilla glue. I simply spliced the existing liftgate bulb and tapped into that, running the wires from the end of the LED strip, under the plastic, where it would meet the liftgate bulb wiring.

Last, although it's in my garage, it does put out some good light, especially in pitch black. It throws about an 8-10ft diameter light out the back.....a nice safety light too.

I'll get another shot when it's completely dark, but wanted to share. Late!!!

I tapped into the 2 wires for the liftgate bulb itself (near the bottom driver's side). There was a red(pos) and orange(neg). I just added some wire to the LED leads and BAM - light :)

damn well that sounds easy enough, what did you have to do to see those two wires? Did you just take off that plastic cover?

I just cut both wires about 1.5 inches before the bulb housing. I didnt use solder here, just some wire connectors. On 1 side of the connector, i matched up the original wires and "crimped" - nice and tight. The other side was the lead from the LED. It's kind of like a poor man's tap-in(or in-line) :D

Oh - good luck on that MOD - i like the light output on that. I was actually going to do something along those same lines, but wanted more light projection behind the vehicle.

yah what you did makes sense for your purpose ... i am constantly using that rear cargo area at all hours of the night and need more light back there like yesterday so im pretty excited about how it might turn out. Your LED strip was a really good idea!
