CRD breathing mods

I have seen a lot of activity on other 4WD brand forums but not much here concerning modifications (EGR Blanking Plates, Catch cans) to reduce soot in the intel manifold.

Any thoughts if this is worthwhile on the VM engine?

I would not touch these items in the motor, as they can make the car unroadworthy, loose your warranty and make them unreliable.
I would wait to see what comes out of the tuning houses in Europe as I am sure they will have some plug in go fast mods very soon. The biggest problem is cracking the ECU, as it is encrypted.

Re: CRD breathing mods

Personally I'm not interested in performance mods as such but all CRD seem to lose performance overtime as the soot chokes the intel manifold.

I believe any performance mods will be considered by the manufacture in the same vain in terms of warranty claims.

Re: CRD breathing mods

I know mine is an older CRD. But 300,000km and it has more power then the day I brought it.
Don't think modern CRD's soot up, low sulfur diesel.
And I use full synthetic oil.

Re: CRD breathing mods

Before deciding on a Jeep I was looking at a Mitsubishi and there are heaps of photos of this CRD sooting up. The emission laws require the exhaust gases to be sent through the manifold. I cant see how this issue would be different for the Jeep CRD. I'll get more information.

You need to read this thread in reverse btw..

This seems interesting also..

Re: CRD breathing mods

While I am no modern diesel expert, the limited info I have found have the DFP filter straight out of the turbo. This heats up the DFP system much faster and burns off the soot quicker.

Apparently they do not see any problems with what some other euros have suffered. This is a completely new motor and hopefully have the latest engineering.

Have you found this with the europeen CRD's?

This issue is heavily debated. This thread outlined mods to a JK 2010 which is running the VM Motori.

I would not drive another kilometre without figuring out if your crankcase breather hose is plumbed directly to the intake like it is on the mercedes CRD. If it is plumbed like the mercedes, then you need to catch can asap imo.

Re: CRD breathing mods

On the JK one guy reported catching 40mls between services. I assume the 2.8 VM Motori is the same basic configuration as the 3L VM Motori. Again have yet to get my Vehicle still at Baltimore awaiting a ship, so I cant confirm.

If it is what I expect, I'll install this:

More information here on the problem or not?:

Re: CRD breathing mods

install a catch can that can be removed before you do any trips to the dealer. I haven't heard of a dealer blaming a catch can on some engine problem, but you don't want to be the first.

Re: CRD breathing mods

I think we are all jumping the gun here, as the VM Motori 3lt motor is different to the Merc 3lt in the WK and the 2.8lt Motori on the Wranglers.
We need to see first if this is going to be a problem, before we all go out and buy a catchcan. Engineers are not silly and will re-engineer a bad system to stop it happening in future models. I am hoping this is the case with our new CRD's.
