oil level

Before my first oil change I checked the level and it was a little low(about 4k miles). I checked it today 2k miles later and its below the add mark? I let it sit for 2+ hours before i checked it. Any ideas?

I think you waited too long before you checked it. Waiting 5-10 minutes after shutting down your warmed up engine should be long enough for the oil to be at an accurate level in the oil pan. When you wait as long as you did, the oil is cool, and the reading is likely to be low.

Of course, I could be utterly wrong. But if you were actually burning oil at such a spectacular rate, you should see clouds of smoke. And, if your GC were leaking it, you should find greasy spots in your driveway.

So, oil expands when it is warm/hot ?

I thought you always checked it when it was cold, so the oil would settle. I did have it puff out some smoke but only twice when i was on an incline like others have stated. And i havent noticed any spots under it.

Maybe but I have never heard such a thing.

Re: oil level

My last WKII 5.7 hemi went through oil about a quart every 2K miles for the first 8K miles. After that it never burned a drop. My new WKII 5.7 hasn't ever burnt a drop since it was new. Every engine is different. Just keep an eye on it.

Re: oil level

I've always checked my oil after running the engine to normal operating temp, then letting it sit 10 minutes off to drain.

But...

I just consulted my Wk2 owners manual, which states:

Checking Oil Level
To assure proper engine lubrication, the engine oil must
be maintained at the correct level. Check the oil level at
regular intervals, such as every fuel stop. The best time to
check the engine oil level is about five minutes after a
fully warmed engine is shut off, or before starting the
engine after it has sat overnight.

Anytime 10min after turning off a car is good. There is no time limit after that.
