Opinions on '11-'12 Overland's subwoofer

Hey folks, so one of the reasons I am thinking about picking up an overland is the built in sub. I know, it will not compare by any means to an after market system. I like the idea of the built in sub due to the fact that it does not kill my cargo space and make my jeep more of a target for theft. I am just curious as to how it sounds. Is it decent for a built in sub? Thanks

It's okay, like the whole audio system itself, but no prize. A $40k+ SUV ought to do better than this, but it's passable. Haven't heard the premium media center option on the SRT, but it sounds like something they should offer as an option on the Overlands.

I like it. I used to put systems in all my rides... but my last few cars have had too much integration to make it worth the money/time to try and put a system in... so I have been opting to just get the best factory system... The sub is ok... not the best.. but sounds great for most types of music... its not shaking the whole car or anything but makes hip hop and what not sounds good.

It sounds fine to me. A little more rumble would have been ok too. You have to be careful how you load the rear compartment. It is easy to block the sub in it's current location.

I was hoping for responses like this. Thank you all. I enjoy a good base, however my fiance hates it. So I figure this will be an option we can both live with.

The 19 speaker, 7.3 system in the str8 would be a nice option. I still wonder where they hide all those speakers...

Most aftermarket installs try to achieve a "showey" bass system with window rattling, over accentuated thumping sounds.

Most OEM target a smooth, enjoyable sound, without the thumping that some take so much pride in.

The Subwoofer in the OEM is pretty unobtrusive. It is intended to provide a pleasant, and full sound. In a well integrated music system the sub should not be heard, but just fill out the experience.

For those wanting all the thump, you can use audio controls to turn down the highs, and accentuate the bass to fit your needs.

Many wish to just crank up the bass so they can run with all the windows down and anoy those around them on the street, believing this makes them cool and important.

I'll step out a bit and say the built in sub on the Overland's is junk, primarily because the sub enclosure is plastic and distorts wildly with any volume or bass line. The 8" Alpine sub itself would be fine if there were a solid wooden or fiberglass enclosure.

Overland Chryco sub enclosure below:

While Uncle Paul's sensibilities deserve full respect, I do appreciate clean sound without the need for ground pounding hip hop in audio competitions.

Here's a few links: http://www.jeepgarage.org/showpost.php?p=490938&postcount=2

Those who have gone to the expense and effort of upgrading WK2 Overland audio generally (1) replace the sub enclosure with either custom fiberglass or the JL Stealthbox, (2) add power to the system, and (3) may have changed out component speakers and subs. My general priorities would be the first two upgrades for the highest impact improvements.

YMMV.

Re: Opinions on '11-'12 Overland's subwoofer

Thank you both Uncle paul and Moosehead. Looks like I have some options. I had a feeling the stock enclosure was by no means ideal. I do enjoy a nice load system, but not one that people will hear inside their houses when I drive by.

I might bring it to my audio installer and see what they can come up with for options. I am sure anything custom will cost a good deal, as with that stealth box.

I just hope it is nothing like my fathers volvo sub, it is a 12 inch bose. But there is no real box to speak of, just a panel like where the GC tire is. The damn thing rattles the entire rear cargo area.

It's not just the Overland that has the built-in sub and the Alpine 7.1 audio system. It's also standard on the Limited and optional on the Laredo.

On the note of that JL stealthbox.. anybody know where to obtain one of those at a good price?

Not as good as my little subs in my dakota, the jeep 8" is total crap. I could make a better sub out of a paper plate and napkins
