TPMS Sensitivity?
 
Got in the Overland this morning after it had been sitting for a few days in the garage in 30-ish degree weather. After pulling out of my driveway, the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) light came on. I didn't have my gauge with me (nor did I think to check the tire pressures on the EVIC), but when I got to work (only about 8 miles from home), I got out and did a visual inspection, and none of the tires looked low. Of course the information in the manual (which is notorious for not being very helpful) says the light will come on when one of the tires is "significantly under-inflated".

I'm just wondering how "sensitive" this system is, and if it could have merely gone on because the tires were "cold" and not warmed up to full pressure?

We took delivery of the Vehicle in April, so this is the first cold snap we've been through with it since we've owned it. I was hoping that someone who's already had experience with the cold weather, might shed some light on this?

This happened to me in fair weather as i was driving. I stopped pulled over and nothing looked low. I continued on and the light went out. It's been months and it hasn't come back on.

they come on at 29psi on mine. I have had one that has a slow leak from day one and sets it off every couple of weeks. When U put the gauge to it they are dead on!

Thanks. I'll check with my gauge tonight, compare with the info on the EVIC, and see where I'm at. I'm assuming (hoping - ha ha), that it's nothing more than the cold and the fact the truck was sitting for a few days on a cold, concrete garage floor. I don't have that long a drive to work, so they really don't even get a good enough run to get really warmed up to operating temperature, especially in the cold.

Mine did the same thing when the temperature dropped and the EVIC read 29 psi. They looked OK but I had the stealer top it off with nitrogen that weekend when I went in for my free oil change. After the top off I could tell the difference visually.

Generally speaking, by the time one can tell that a modern tire is low by visually inspecting it, the tire is WAY low. The usual drill is to check your tire pressures by gauge when they are cold.

BTW, in my experience when the weather turns cold, I often have to add air to my tires, regardless of vehicle type. (By "air," I mean a roughly 80%/20% nitrogen/oxygen mix.)

Yep, it's pretty accurate. The first sub freezing morning last year my warning came on but the tires looked fine. Parking it in the sun for an hour brought the pressure back up. Checking with the gauge afterwards, they were only a bit low.

On another occasion I had a flat. When the tire is actually going flat the warning bells get pretty frantic!

On the way home last night, TPMS light was still on, picture in the EVIC came on showing all tires at 31 and 32 lbs, and the back right tire in the picture (which was at 31 lbs) was "Blinking". Checked the tires with my gauge. They were all at 31 and 32 lbs. Topped them all off to 36 lbs and the TPMS indicator went off and all seems fine.

Two questions: First, why would the TPMS light come on when all the tires were at 31 and 32 lbs? Could it just be from the cold? Second, why would the back right tire on the EVIC picture be "blinking" when it was basically the same pressure as the other three tires?

Weird. Guess these electronic "conveniences" have their quirks.

Not 100% sure but normally the TPMS on every vehicle I know of will show low pressure at ~6 psi below the recommended pressure which is 34 psi. When it gets cold the pressure in the tires drops and it is very likely that you had 30-31 psi in the tires when it was 80* out. At 30* the pressure dropped to 26-27 psi and the light came on. The tires look the same at 31 psi as they do at 26 if you just look at them.

Hollywood, The back tire (flashing) is the one that tripped the presure warning (all four are independent). That tire's air pressure probably went lower than the trip point for a moment. The EVIC displays current tire pressure which may be above the trip point. It will continue to flash until the warning resets (the reset point is a few psi higher than the low trip point). My rear driver side seems to be the one that always trips the sensor.

My sensors seem to indicate about 3 psi lower than a gage, I tried a couple.

I'm having the same issue. The other day, the first really cold morning since taking delivery of my vehicle in April, the TPMS came on telling my front driver tire was at 29 psi. I since filled the tire bringing 1 psi higher than the others (33/32/32/32). The TPMS still remains on, even after long rides and shutting off the vehicle for the night. The next morning, after sitting all night, it comes back on. Even though the one tire is a psi higher than the others it still claims low pressure. Any insight or suggestions?

It seemed to me that I had to fill the offending tire to at least 35, maybe 36 psi for the warning to be reset. Once reset you can reduce tire pressure to your normal. My 09 liberty reset without much issue.
