LED License Plate Lights Install w/pics

I installed the LED license plate lights today. The pictures are not all that great because the combination of bright sunlight and iphone but you can get the idea. As I mentioned in another post "regular" LED replacements will not fit because of the angle the bulbs sit at, will not allow the cover to close (led bulbs are almost always longer).

I purchased these Putco bulbs from Xenondepot:

http://www.KBcarstuff.com/194-LED-Re...-p/280003w.htm

All you need for the install is a flat small or medium screw driver to open the plastic covers. The plastic covers are kind of tight to remove because there is a rubber seal that sort of sticks them on as well as the plastic clip. Also depending on what type of screws or plate surround you have you may need to remove the license plate because there is not a lot of clearance for the covers to swing down.

The stock 194 type (w5w) bulbs come right out but due to the LEDs being slightly thicker (more uniform in thickness rather than tapering like the wedge base on the 194) they are somewhat hard to get installed in the socket. The first one I installed appeared to be completely in and lit up with no problem but I found it went in quite a bit farther by simple gently pushing and moving slightly.

Just so people know what they are looking at in the pics below:

1. LED's used
2. Right side plate light cover closed light off
3. Cover open showing retainer clip and black gasket
4. Right side plate light housing showing 194 bulb and the angled install (and yes the inside is black plastic no reflector whatsoever)
5. LED bulb
6. LED installed (not on but looks that way due to sun)
(following pics in next post due to forum limits)
7. LED on
8. Comparison stock (left) and LED (right) with covers off
9. Stock bulb with cover on
10. LED bulb with cover on
11. Both LEDs with covers on

I am quick to bitch when something is not to my satisfaction but also quick to praise when something goes well. Xenondepot was very helpful with these lights he was able to get me measurements so I could determine if they would fit and allow the covers to close. Also these came quicker than expected from Putco, also probably will not be able to find elsewhere because they are new (I checked around for prices). Good experience and I am happy with the results!

awesome man! I'm putting together a LED package for my 2010 srt8 with some new HID fogs as well. Can't wait now... would you happen to have a before and after pic at night?

Thanks for the illustration but that's too costly for simple LEDs. I got a pair for CD$12 and they look great. They are available at any Canadian Tire store in Canada.

Very true you could probably get a set for less than $12 even. But I believe you get what you pay for kinda the reason I bought a jeep rather than a kia. :D

But I have seen the colors of some other no-name brand leds and the colors are NOT white and the intensity is not there, and no lifetime warranty. I prefer to pay once (a little bit extra) and not have to worry about heat issues (there is this with cheap LEDs), warranty, or quality issues. Plus made in the USA. All depends what you are looking for.

No, I have bulbs to fit in the rear tail lights on the liftgate but am trying to decide what I am going to buy for the regular backup lights and the "auxiliary" ones as well. I tried to remove the light on the left side of the liftgate today there are two 8mm nuts holding it down, I removed it but the light only wanted to lift on that one side I think I may need to remove the chrome trim in the center of the liftgate to actually lift off the lights. I didnt want to break it and had limited time. Anyone know how to get at these bulbs an easier way?
