2012 now or 2013 next year – worth the wait?

I’m eying 2012 GC (V6) and wondering should I pull the trigger now or wait another year to get next year’s version. My current car is getting old (01 Nissan pathfinder with 180K) but still has been relatively trouble free and still running strong. With some TLC I think it can go through another year and hit 200K.

Wondering what the new 8 speed transmission will do to performance and mpg. I have seen some good reviews of Chrysler 300 with that new transmission and added bonus of about 15% MPG increase (highway). Probably would not expect 15% increase but 8-9% moving it from 23 to 25 (mpg, highway) would be a nice bonus.

The new diesel next year might be interesting as well but probably from MPG perspective it would not make sense to me. About 10% premium on diesel where I am and initial higher cost would probably cancel out any savings unless this thing can rate at 30+MPG highway.

2013 probably will not be available until September and most likely will not be able to get any a good deal on it until November next year.

What else might be coming next year which might be worth the wait? What do you think? Wait or do it now!

There will always be something to wait for...

If you want one and need one, pull the trigger. If you don't really need it, wait. My 2 cents anyway.

You will need to pay a price premium for the diesel and probably a premium for the 8 speed on the 6 if they are consistent with the 300.

2013 will be available in September, but that doesn't mean the 8 speed will be available yet. I don't think we're sure yet? Chrysler seems to love playing the "Late Availability" game these days.

i.e., perhaps the 8 speed will only be available in the Hemi at the beginning of the model year, and Pentastar won't get it until later in the year.

Or vice versa.

Or perhaps it won't be available on either at the beginning of the model year.

Or perhaps both will.

Personally, I'm not sure I'd want it the first year it's available. Yeah, the Chrysler 300 is sorta being used as a guinea pig to work out any huge issues, but there's still a good chance there will be smaller issues in the first year of year of use in the WK2. For example, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't get programming exactly right in the beginning. Or the WK2 will have some sort of weird vibration issue. Yeah, maybe I'm being paranoid. *shrug*.

Like others have said, there is always some reason to wait, if you want the Jeep...go for it. If you're financing, rates are low (as in, Chrysler will lend you the money for free LOL)...will they be next year? Don't know.

I also thought about waiting for the 13 model year, but like others have said, who knows when they will offer the 8 speed and LED taillights? So I ordered an Overland late last month, and today it got built pending inspection.

Oh boy, looks like I'm getting a car that assembly started on Friday and finished on a Monday. Should be interesting.

I wouldn't assume the 8 speed will be hands down better than the 5 speed. It will be better in some, perhaps many ways but if my experience with my 7 speed Infiniti FX is any indication there will be trade offs. The 7 speed is constantly shifting and still gets confused at times. The manual shift mode is pretty poor. You're not commanding the transmission, you're making suggestions it may or may not respect. The GC 5 speed in manumatic mode is flawless. Even in fully auto mode once I got used to the extra accelerator pedal required to get the GC to shift it felt perfectly natural. In its way the V6 is more engaging than the FX because I have to pay attention to what the machine is up to.

Tough question. like: should I go for blonde or brunette?
Personally I have decided to wait for the ZF. What helps me to decide is that my 04 Overland has less than 50k miles, I have no payments and one more year of the aftermarket warranty. I am also concern about too much shifting but if all the top brands are using 7 and 8 speed ZF's there shouldn't be a big problem.....

In the same position. Got a perfectly good 03 GC limited but looking to trade up. Was looking at an '11 leftover but couldn't get the dealer anywhere near invoice (only Jeep dealer, with stock, for 500 km). So was thinking about an order but decided to just wait and pickup a CRD next year. I am a little nervous of the QL system anyway so I figure another year of watching the reviews and comments will help me decide between the Overland and a Limited.

One would hope that 8 speed would be standard with Limited and/or Overland models.

Also reading posts like "About to give up on my WK2"makes me wonder whatever to wait a couple of more months to let Chrysler figure out the kinks. On the other hand putting a new tranny in is not an easy task so I would imagine initially they might have some issues with it.

I guess I've been spoiled by my Pathfinder but I think sometimes it is a hit or miss. My friend has a newer version and has been plagued by various issues.

My Overland was the similar late Friday afternoon build finish - Saturday inspection thing (the factory was working at least 6 days and a couple shifts at the time). Then it bounced around storage lots for a couple weeks waiting for a train. Was delivered with 50 miles on the odometer but, except for the quirky 730N, I've had no issues in 10,000 miles. Hasn't been back to the dealer except for an oil change.
