Quadra Lift Suspension - The Final Chapter

As most of you know I've posted on several threads about recurring challenges I've had with my Quadra Lift system. To recap, I have an early (Aug 2010) build, Overland V8 with approximately 12,500 miles. I'm summarizing my experience for those of you with similar issues in the hopes that it helps you with your local dealer.

I've been to my dealer four (4) separate times for the same issue and finally had enough to the point I sent Chrysler a lemon law letter. To the credit of my dealer and Chrysler, all parties involved have been quick to respond, transparent, and helpful. Note that in all cases, my dealer has been in touch with the engineers of the system and various components. They've shared their conversations and some email dialogue which has been insightful and interesting at the same time.

In each case, I experienced the following "symptoms" (my words)

Quadra Lift System will not, or is extremely slow to transition from “Normal Ride Height” to “Off Road 1” setting
Quadra Lift System unable to reach “Off Road 2” setting
Nitrogen tank making frequent/abnormal/audible pressurization/depressurization adjustments
Received “Air Suspension System Cooling Down” fault message
System appears "confused" when selecting settings

Below is a chronicle of my visits and resolution.
March 7 – March 25, 2011 (21 Calendar Days)
Issue: “…Quadra Lift System service needed and air bags keep fluctuating air”
Remediation:
Electronic Stability Program Module reprogrammed
Automatic Temperature Control reprogrammed
Motor and Gear, Power Lift Gate – test and replace power lift gate drive unit and flash PLGM module
April 4 – April 6, 2011 (3 Calendar Days)
Issue: “…Quadra Lift System failed, over temp warning came on”
Remediation:
Air Suspension Control Module – test and replace
Requested Technician
April 28 – June 16, 2011 (19 Calendar Days)
Issue: “Check Quadra Lift. Doesn’t go to top levels”
Remediation:
Referred to Aftermarket Installation Center
Requested Technician
August 15 – August 22, 2011 (8 Calendar Days)
Issue: “…Quadra Lift System is inoperable, check for SOP”
Remediation:
Compressor Assembly – test and replace air suspension
Shock Absorber. Rear – replace rear shock absorber
Check and update software
Cover/Pad, Instrument Panel – replace upper cover
Lemon Law Visit: Oct 24 - Nov 2 2011 (9 Calendar Days)
Issue: "Quadra lift is inoperable at times system cooling down message comes on dash check and advise"
Diag
Inspect quadra system for any kinks in lines
Inspect front air line assembly for any kinks or pinches
Solenoids (Purge, Vacuum, Air

The day I mailed the lemon law letter, and approximately 1.5 weeks after the issue reoccurred, the system corrected itself and functioned as if new. During the diagnostic, the service technician confirmed the system did malfunction and register fault codes. However, the QL system was registering the same readings for nitrogen pressure and other diagnostics the last time he worked on my vehicle. This was an interesting point which confirmed there were no leaks in the system.

The next contact with the engineers followed a healthy review of my jeep's computer logs and fault codes. Their conclusion was stunning....my system continued to fault due to a communications signal conflict between the right front airbag sensor, my automatic windshield wiper sensor, and the main computer.

The engineer who designed the sensor was working on a wired harness override and the prototype was sent to the dealership for installation. Essentially this harness hardwires the signal to avoid conflict or the confusion my QL system was experiencing. Jeep is working on a revised sensor, which to me means this is a known issue and may become a service bulletin.

So in summary the trial and error with the dealer and Chrysler went as follows:

1. Reprogram QL module
2. Replace QL module & repressurize system
3. Replace ENTIRE QL system (compressor, lines, bags, etc.)
4. Override QL front ride sensor

So far so good. All parties involved are confident this will resolve the issue. I share my story as I want those of you who are also experiencing this issue to know that Jeep is actively working on the problem. YOU ARE NOT ALONE and are being heard by the engineers who are just as passionate about this vehicle as we are.

Best of luck to you and feel free to reach out to me with any questions

Thanks for the update, I've been following all of these threads since I bought my Laredo X with QL in April. No problems with mine, but it pays to be informed.

Do they think the sensor communication issue was causing all of the problems from the beginning?

That was certainly part of it, but I definitely had a leak earlier in the process.

Well, mine hasn't shown any signs of a leak yet, and since I don't have an automatic windshield wiper sensor, I should be golden. ;)

Thanks for the thorough writeup, it's good to know engineering is actively working on the issues. Hope yours works as designed from now on.

Thanks for the write up!

Really interesting seeing how all the systems and a possible comm error are creating such ridiculous issues.

It would be interesting to find out how many Jeeps with quadra lift were built on the lower model platforms (Laredo, Limited) versus the Overland's (and Limited w/ all the lux features).
I'd almost be willing to bet that no one with a Laredo X and quadra lift has had these huge issues since they don't have all the other bells and whistles that the Overlands have.
Anyone with more info care to chime in?

Here's my data: 2011 Laredo X ORII w/ QL. Built Aug '10. 14k miles. No QL issues. QL is used multiple times per day.

This is a limited datapoint, but according to a poll I did last summer, there are 8 of us on the forum that have the Laredo with ORA2 and QL.

Thank you for the summary and update on your issue.

Your experience was one of the reasons I waited until the 2012 models came out before buying one. Happily, my Overland hasn't had any QL problems.

Bought a '12 GC Overland about 2 months ago and I'm having this exact issue. Took it to the dealership once to no avail...glad I found the info.

I will let everyone know how it works out.

I have a 2011 Laredo X with ORII and have had QL issues as well, and this sounds almost what I've been dealing with, minus the system failures. Goes to aero height and back just fine, but slow to hit OR 1 and no go on OR 2. Thanks for the update and i'll see what the dealer says since they missed it the first time.
