Dead reckoning, Bread crumbs and Mediacenter 730N

I can't seem to get this unit to DR and leave bread crumbs. It's not in the manual. Do we get these features?

You only get those features with the optional wings package. But Chrysler ran out of dough last year so I think they cancelled the bread crumbs.

"Breadcrumbs" are known as "trails" in the newer manuals. The trail button is in the lower right corner of the map when you are looking at the full map screen.

Dead reckoning is not something you turn off or on. It simply continues calculating your location based on speed and direction, even if you lose sight of GPS signal (i.e. in tunnels, in the city where there are very tall buildings, or in heavily wooded areas).

I believe the bread crumbs feature is the soft button in the bottom right corner of the nav screen.

Sweet! Regarding DR some older GPS units didn't display although all are capabable by design. Trails! Who would have figured, I've been in the GM world too long ;-)

I was in a Boston tunnel and the nav just hung, Went on a road that isn't on the maps and I didn't get "Trails" fka Bread Crumbs. I'll give both another try tbis weekend.

@ Rubi, thanks for the info one small addition (speed, direction, time traveled)

Thanks

Trails is always available. You don't need to be offroad.

My 730N works well in the Boston Tunnels... errr.. as well as a Harmon GPS can work. The radio did not hang as far as I can tell.

There are very few consumer GPS units with DR. GPS units without DR stop displaying location because they lose satellite reception for long enough that they could not locate themselves.

If you are driving through a long tunnel and the GPS does not complain, the DR feature is working. If you get a blank screen or loss of signal screen, the DR is not working.

Hello all,

So I couldn't wait, yea, it's Friday and I should be out doing something else.

Figure out the "trail" feature is a always off or always on feature, that stinks. Ideally it would go on when it realizes you aren't on any mapped roads. example, I went into the x-mas tree farm up the street and started driving around up and down the isles. It leaves this yellow line on the screen even on known roads. So, thats a huge negative in my view, honestly it stinks.

The "trail" feature simply records where you have driven, regardless of what is on the map. .. that's why some here call it a bread crumb feature. Trail is a misnomer.

None of the factory GPS systems give you any off road "trail" features as the radios are loaded with the street map data base, not the trail data base.

I always keep a loaf of bread in the back just in case the nav stops working, I can leave my own bread crumbs. Just like people who carry compasses in their cars...

I took a snapshot of the Trail feature. It really stinks that it's a always on or off no configuration option to set only when not on known roads.

My Enclave unit does this automatically starts and stops and actually leaves "Bread Crumbs" I'll take a picture and post it up.

@ coldcase - Based on the directions from you guys I enabled it and it tracked my trail or one could say it mapped my trail on the screen. I would say based on that Trail is the appropriate name/term and I can see why they dont call it bread crumbs. But I get what you mean, you are talking about Trail(s) as in offroad, autocross, hicking, rally, etc.

1st pic 730N screen, 2nd pic Enclave white dots are the Bread crumbs, 3rd pic the nav unit automatically goes into a split screen with a larg compus and tracks your location with white dots (bread crumbs)

The trail feature is designed to get you back to where you started. It doesn't care whether or not a road is there. The Enclave system may be a bit more advanced but it is a luxury and not a necessity. Our Nav trail feature works well for its' intended purpose and is very easy to turn on and off when you need it. Not knocking the Enclave, I almost bought one. :)
