Pionion Bearing...
Well after replacing both front wheel bearings, the passenger cv axle I am still have this rumbling ish noise when driving, particularily noticeable upon letting off the gas. I had a mechanic friend drive it and he seems to think it is probably the pinion bearing in the front diff. I also recently changed the front diff fluid which was silver, and the cage the rotates around in there does have grooves in it, how bad they are, Im not sure how much is normal and cannot get a good picture. Is there any way to be certain this is the cause?

How difficult is it to change or what kind of price we talking from a shop? Or am I just better off buying a whole new front axle?

Re: Pionion Bearing...
I had the same issue about 3 months ago and it definitely was the bearings. It makes more of a grrrrring noise especially when taking the foot off the juice.
Silver paste is not good as you are looking at metal filings in the diff oil.

Sorry can't comment on the price as Australian prices won't reflect what you may pay in your neck of the woods.

I'm interested as to how you go with this as I have the opposite problem where I overhauled the diff and still have noise somewhere as discussed in a thread.

Good luck

Re: Pionion Bearing...
i'm guessing there is either a preload or a torque that need to be meet as the gears need to mesh properly.. prob not gonna be cheap.

I have the same thing. I'm getting my rear differential replaced. I has it rebuilt last week but it gave up and now I'm getting it replaced.
