10 MPG during this cold snap

My mileage has tanked since it got cold here in Alberta. I drive 8 km to work every morning up and down through the river valley in stop and go traffic the whole way. Are my fuel economy readouts normal?...I feel that the cold and the stop and go equates to these low values and I shouldn't worry...what are others getting during cold spells? I got about 14 mpg in the warmer months driving the same route.

A drop of 3-4 mpg is not unusual. The cold weather warm ups and low tire pressure are the most significant factors. Do you have an engine block heater? I found a block heater helps mpg in cold weather, especially for routine shorter trips.

I thought the winter gas formula (maybe that is just the US) was mostly to blame?

Cold Winter air drops gas mileage significantly. Mine usually drops more than 10 percent.

it doesnt help the mpgs when you have to let your vehicle idle for 3 hrs to warm up just cause its -100 outside. im not bitter, these are just facts.

Yes, we have the "Winter Gas" formula here as well. I notice a drop in economy in all our cars once we start pumping winter gas plus the cold outside. We warm up our cars longer, used the heater all the time, butt warmers, steering wheel warmer, lower tire pressure... all take its toll in the winter in the formula of less MPG.

It's a trade off for sure but when it is stupidly cold out it sure is great to have the Jeep already warm and with a toasty seat and steering wheel.

Are you using Remote Start and letting it warm up? That will hurt your mpg.

Can a dealer install the engine block heater if I didn't get it when I first ordered the Jeep?

Sure they can. For a fee of course.

I'm getting about 12-12 1/2 mpg with the colder temps, even more annoying is my tires are losing a lot of air with the cold weather.
