New Turbo and hoses....

Was just in for a fluid change and a 'check' on the tranny.....and was informed that a new turbo and hoses is required and on order. My Jeep has 61540km on it AND I got the extended warranty...so the $6000 plus will be covered.....that makes buying the extended warranty a good decision!

Did you have a problem? lack of power, CEL, oil consumption?

Its weird that a routine checkup would end up being a turbo? and if its for an oil leak the boost hoses are SUPER common and likely the main if not only cause. some oil in the hoses is normal.

Re: New Turbo and hoses....

No indication....maybe a 10% decrease in fuel economy (but may be due to colder weather)....very little drop in oil on the dipstick....no power loss.

I asked them to clean up the hoses, as I have done two oil changes w/o cleaning them.

They cleaned everything up, ordered the parts, and will install them in Dec.....and OK'd me to drive it 'til then.

something odd there, not doubting you need the parts, just that dealers don't go about replacing $6000 in stuff without a good reason.

I'm going out on a limb and guessing that your air intake tube seal tore and a piece hit your turbo and bent the fins, the jeep will still run but the turbo needs replacing at that point.

If thats the case (or any turbo damage really) and the dealer ok'd him to continue driving it!!!!
Wow, an out of balance turbo that fails can EASILY take out an entire engine.

I didn't say it would run good. :)

Re: New Turbo and hoses....

On a diesel its is particularly important to not inject oil because of a failed seal. Because it uses the injectors for throttle control and not a throttle plate, If you have a seal fail and allows the engine to run on the oil in the intake you can get a "run away" where there is no way to turn it off. There is nothing to stop the air or fuel, no injectors to turn off, no coil packs to remove power from... not good.
