Putco fog bulbs get too hot

I know that some people have replaced the stock fogs with the Putco 35w "jet yellow" bulbs so I thought I would give this a shot also. After getting the drivers' side in I turned the fogs on to see how they looked and decided to leave them on for a few minutes just to see what kind of heat the new bulbs put out. After about 2-3 minutes I tested the both fogs at various angles with an IR temp probe. I tried to hit the reflector as well as the bulb, taking 4 or 5 readings and going to each fog twice. The highest reading I got from the stock side was 110F, while the hottest on the Putco side was 180F. This, again, was after no more than 3 minutes. If they were on for any longer I am sure the that temperatures would rise even more and that the Putco would rise proportionally higher. The lens on the Putco side was also very hot to the touch where the stock side was only warm. Personally even though this represents a $70 waste of money (since I had to cut the tabs on the Putcos) I am going back to the stock bulbs. I do not want to risk melting anything or worse. I just wanted to pass along the temperature info for anyone interested.

Very interesting considering the LED`s are supposed to run cooler than the halogens. I ordered a set (not putco) online that should be here any day - I will keep an eye out for this. Thanks.

These are not the LEDs, they are a halogen bulb that some have used to replace their fogs. The stock fogs are a 24w bulb whereas these are a 35w. I did put LEDs in for my DRLs but I didn't see a part that would work for the fogs.

Thanks for the data. I never did stock temp measurements before is installed HID fogs. As for LEDs, not all of them run cool. Per watt, they are actually hotter than halogen.

Which LEDs did you run for the fog lights? I did some searching but I did not find anything available.

I bought mine from eBay on this link. http://www.ebay.com/itm/9009-PW13-H1...ht_2307wt_1144
You have to shave off the tabs on the outside and there is one on the rectangle section that needs trimming too. I just used a razor blade to cut mine out. A Hobby knife cause it has a handle. I couldn't get detailed pics even with my dlsr. If you get them just compare the bulbs and you will see the difference. Here's my led bulbs. http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/IMG_1384.jpg

They get hot because of the built in resistances.
