A/C Hissing Sound and Dealer Attitude

I just took my Jeep in for service and I reported a hissing sound that I could hear when the GC was at idle and the climate control system was on. The service department said that it was normal and that it was a relief valve. Does anyone else get this kind of sound with the climate control on?

I also had another issue (whistling at idle) that they have been unable to resolve even after three visits...seems like it either does not happen when I drop it off or they are ignoring it and just saying it is normal. I am not a tech (nor did I sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night), but I know enough about engine sounds to know the whistling is not a normal engine sound. I complained and the service manager said "well you bought the vehicle at another dealer why don't you take it there"...so it's time to find another dealer or drive 20 miles out of my way to the place where I bought the Jeep.

This is the one time I hope I get one of those survey e-mails...

Before you leave that dealership for good I would make an appt. to speak with the owner or general manager. They need to be made aware of the service manager's attitude. Perhaps you might help another customer avoid that kind of treatment. If they don't fire him you probably shouldn't go back there but if they do then you can continue doing business there instead of driving 20 miles away.

I agree with 77cherokee. If you get nowhere with the managers then an email to Chrysler would be in order to let them know about this dealers srevice. There is no excuse in todays auto market to have an attidude towards a customer.

Has anyone had the problem that was addressed in TSB 24-007-11? Just wondering what kind of sound they had and when it happened.

I've some some checking and the hissing sound definitely comes on when the A/C is activated at low vehicle speeds.

Regarding the dealer issue, I have not seen a survey yet so I'm considering sending a note to the dealership just to let them know they lost a service customer. I don't have the time or the care to make a special visit to discuss the problems I had with the service manager...I just want to get my problems fixed.

I also sometimes hear a "psss" sound inside the cabin that could definitely be attributed to the release of pressure through a valve. I figure that it's a quirk of the HVAC system. It doesn't bother me, but it certainly is unusual.

I listened carefully for the hissing sound, yesterday, and now think that it might have something to do with the operation of the Quadra-Lift System, instead of the HVAC system. Has anyone else noticed an occasional "psss" sound, like the sound of air coming gently out of a tire valve?

I sometimes hear the QL system working but it's more like a buzz than a pss. It is very feint and hardly noticeable.

The hiss is getting more noticeable and I found out that the recirc button light flashes when I press it. Dealer time...

Read your owners manual on hvac and recirc operation before you waste time with the dealer ;)

I did and found out that it was operator error on my part...although the manual could have said that the light will flash if you try to select recirc on the wrong setting. Thanks... :o

The A/C sound is getting annoying though (and does not sound "normal") so there will still be a dealer visit. We have a longer trip over the holiday week and I don't want to deal with this during that. During a trip 2 years ago (different vehicle) we had the A/C compressor fail on the highway which made for foggy windows...not fun.

Progress...

Took the Jeep to the dealer where I purchased it from. Their service department did a check of the A/C system and found that the charge was very low...recharged the system and the noises went away. They put dye in but could not find a leak right away, so we get to drive it for a few weeks and then take it back in. Could be the evaporator under/inside the dash...but that's what a warranty is for.

Why the previous dealer didn't check the charge is beyond me. They not only lost the opportunity to fix the problem (which I'm sure they would have made some $$ on) but their refusal to do this type of check means they lost a customer for all future maintenance work.

Question...if I had a low enough charge to hear a whistling noise from the compressor would/could there be potential damage to it? The service advisor said that the system should shut itself off if the charge were too low and it didn't get to that point.

Main concern is premature failure of the compressor...and I'm not sure if that's covered under the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty.
