Transmission fluid

Hi there
I have a 2004 WJ with the I6 engine and I need to change the filter and fluid on the tranny.
The parts dealer here in Iceland tells me I have to use mopar ATF
it costs one arm and half a leg:cool:
Is it true do I have to use Mopar ATF or can i just use any ATF I want to?
I changed the fluid in the transfer case aand I bought the Mopar fluid he told me to buy, now Im thinking maybe hes just ripping me off.
Im also going to change fluids on both differentials, can you tell me how much oil is in each.
I know there I can use SAE 75W 90 differential oil of any type.
Thanks a lot for all the information I get here.

Greetings from the cold and snow in Iceland

Re: Transmission fluid

Any ATF+4 is what to use in the transmission. Use a WIX filter.

This, I also believe it's the same for the TC (at least Selec Trac). Here's a link for the fluids:

After my transmission rebuild the shop put in Renault (ELF) D3 synthetic. Didn't see any difference in changing gears or other behaviour.
For the differentials you need to know if you have quadra drive or not, because depending on this, you also need some limited slip additive for the Vari-Lok inside the diff.
Front axle usually takes 1.2 Lts of fluid. The rear axle depends on which axle you have: Dana 35 takes 1.7 Lts and Dana 44 takes 2.3 Lts.

If you have the NV 245/247/249 transfer cases, there is no aftermarket substitute for the Mopar fluid.

Re: Transmission fluid

O yes there is. At least for the 247 T-case the fluid is Mobil 424. An engineer who worked on the T-case project at New Venture told this and i'm using it now for 3 1/2 years, 100.000 Km, in my T-case. Maybe the price difference in the USA is not that big, but here in Brazil i had to pay BRL 80 (= 44 USD) for 1 Qt of the "special" fluid at the dealer. I bought one Gallon of Mobil 424 and payed around BRL 18 a Qt (10 USD).
All the WJ T-cases (NV 147, NV 242 and NV 247) where from the beginning filled with ATF +4, but this was causing clutch chatter in the progressive coupling and i think in 2000 they changed to the "special"fluid. Now only the NV 242 is still using ATF +4.

The only TC options I've seen for the WJ are NV 147/242/247 (no 245/249). According to the link earlier, only the NV242 can use ATF4 fluid.

It all depends on what the OP has on his WJ/

The fluid that is recommended by Mopar and WJ Jeeps is Mopar NV245/NV247/NV249.

Re: Transmission fluid

This is the same fluid I used in my Transfer case, Im going tomorrow to the parts dealer to buy the tranny filter and Im going to have a little talk to him about the tranny fluid.
I do have the Quadra Trakc II and I don,t have any lockers in the diffs.
I.m pretty sure I have Dana 30 in front and Dana 35 in the rear so 3 liters of 75W90 oil is enough.

Best to all

Yes, Quadra Trac II requires the special TC fluid. However, since you still have the 42RE tranny (only option w/ the I6), regular old ATF4 fluid is used for the tranny.

Re: Transmission fluid

For the 42RE tranny they also recommend to adjust the bands when changing the fluid.

Re: Transmission fluid

Ok fine
How are the bands adjusted?
Can I somewhere read how its done?
I assume its done from inside the pan.

P.S
Its snowing some more is this never going to end?
