Puff of steam from under hood 5.9

After 10min of driving in cold weather, after stopping at a light, I sometimes get a small puff of steam from the grill. I have pulled over a few times, but to no avail. No leaks, and system is full of coolant...

Bizarre eh?

First welcome and we must see pictures of your 5.9L.

Check your cooling system. It could be your Radiator Cap.

Is it a lot of smoke or just a puff?

Will do, its just an occasional puff, right when it gets warm. Then it rarely does it again. Cap sounds like good logic, ill check it out.

Ill have to get some pics together, she's a dark grey stock 5.9 with 175k, still solid.

My 4.7 does that only when it is cold and damp out from rain or snow. The only thing i can attribute it to is when I have noticed the moisture coming in contact with the hot radiator, thus creating steam. My cooling system is solid, there are no issues with it what so ever.

My 5.9 does that too. Never bothered me because it only happened every so often

Well, I took the cap off and worked the spring around. Hasn't puffed in awhile...prob should replace it.

Cool, so ya think the pressure was just pushing coolant by? That would be an easy fix no doubt

I have a Jeep Grand Cherakee 2014 with 30,000 miles, 4x4, when I bought it in November 2014, I noticed smoke coming out from under the engine too. What is it. I have had the car to the dealer garage twice now, they tell me everything is normal. I wonder. Please answer me. I am cvssimonnet@frontiernet.net

Re: Puff of steam from under hood 5.9

Not sure if this helps but I have this happen on my vehicle almost every morning also. I believe it is just condensation under the hood and on the engine itself. As engine heats up that moisture starts to steam up and comes out the grill. I to thought something was wrong and kept popping the hood every morning but never found anything. Nothing loose no leaks nothing. So I just wrote it off to condensation. Once engine is up to temp it's all gone.
