WK2 New Door Hinge Design vs. WK - Vibration
Hello Guys,

Just trying to familiarize myself more with my new WK2. Call me anal, but when driving, I notice a slight vibration of the top of the door jamb against the inside. In comparison, my 2009 WK has NO VIBRATION at the top door jam. This tells me that the door assembly is not as stiff on the WK2. So far I do not have any air noises. The doors are of course of different design.

So.....I went ahead and compared my 96 ZJ and 2009 WK door hinges to my WK2. To me, it looks like a progressiver weaker design. Just going back to the 2009 WK, the TOP and bottom hinges are of the double type. On the new WK2 the top hinge is only a single type hinge and the bottom is a double hinge. Why did they eliminate the top double hinge on the WK2? Is there a reason for this? Will the doors be as durable as on the WK, or will the WK2 doors lose their stiffness more and more over time? My old 96 ZJ has a full length piano type hinge, which has to be the stiffest.

Comments anyone?

Here are the pics of the door hinges. The upper door hinge has changed dramatically. Why?

Bump. Any comments from Jeep factory people?

Re: WK2 New Door Hinge Design vs. WK - Vibration
I'll tell you what, I have a an 07 WK and find the door hinges to be atrocious. Not until 2009 i think did they fix them, made them 3 bolts to the frame vs just 2. With 2 the hinge flexes (actually bends!) out from the frame very easily (wind pulls the door from your hand, etc) and the door shuts fine but may start to rub right on the corner of the bend line on the door and the fender.

No vibrations or anything when closed but it was an obviously terrible design and inexcusable. It had been fixed for 09-10, maybe even 08 WKs.

If you look at your pics, namely the 2nd and the 3rd pictures, the WK has the same amount of steel just spaced apart and the WK2 has them stuck together. What that means is that the WK is weaker because there can be more torsional flex since they are apart, but the WK2 acts as one thick steel and thus NO, your logic doesn't work here.

Sined240, I'm not so sure about your theory. The bottom hinge on the WK2 is still of the double type, but not the top hinge. If then, the top hinge is stronger than the bottom, wouldn't Jeep have opted to make the bottom hinge of the single type as well? Bottom line is that I have vibration at the top of the door jamb on the WK2, my ZJ and WK both have no vibration. Perhaps the window frame itself is just weaker due to new design. How else would vibration be explained? I might add that my doors seem tight and not visibly misaligned.

Before you start claiming a weaker design I think you should try to find out if this rattle is a common problem, our 2011 Laredo wk2 has no rattles, there are a lot of variables as to the strength of the hinge, materials used, position on the frame(loading), weight put on hinge, how much assistance it gets from other hinge and catch, all these plus more would need to be taken into account befor you could say its a weaker hinge
