1st Oil Change V8...1.5 months old, 4k+ miles...M1 Synthetic...advice???

Ok...so getting ready to take 1st road trip with new 2012 JGC on Friday morning (12/16)...figured 1.5 months into ownership with just over 4k miles clocked, it's time to have 1st oil change done (to clean engine out from Break-In period).

Planning on doing it on Thurs (12/15) in AM...questions on the following to confirm details & get some advice...

- Mobil 1 Synthetic (7.5 qts)...5w-20 or 0w-20, for 5.7 MDS...???
- any recommended oil filter, or doesn't matter (FRAM, M1, Pennzoil, etc)??
- no oil change light yet...should I perform reset of oil change reminder (3x on gas pedal) to let ECM know oil was changed, or do I have to wait til light comes on in the future to do reset??

...please confirm or advise on above details.

TIA :)

Per the owner's manual you should use 5W-20.

Definitely a M1, K&N, Purolator PurONE, Wix or Napa Gold filter...NO FRAM! 5w-20 and you can't go wrong switching to full synthetic.

Basically any brand name synthetic (Mobil 1, Valvoline, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Castrol) will be fine for this vehicle that specifies conventional oil at 8000 mile drain intervals. I would also say that going with the Mopar filter is not a bad idea.

I just get the 5w20 synthetic brand that has good deals, usually at Walmart or Amazon subscriptions...

5w20 is the way to go.

Don't use anything but 5w20. Any top name full synthetic will do. Mopar filter is OK . Just use any filter, except Fram, that has a backflow valve.

You should reset the oil change reminder every time you change the oil.

Save the coin and let the dealer do it.
At the end of the day, the warranty covers the engine for 100k. You going to keep it longer than that? I would be more worried about the bags holding up the four corners if you are...
If there is a problem, paperwork showing the dealership did the work is a lot more powerful in litigation than a couple of Mobil 1 boxtops...

It may be hard to believe, but some people actually do keep their vehicles longer than 100k miles. This is where it would be wise to invest in the lifetime warranty. Not to mention, I'd rather do the oil change myself and know it is done right, using the oil that I want to run in my engine. Regardless, saved receipts from supplies are all that is needed for maintenance work not completed at the dealership in regards to warranty issues.

I also did my first oil change early (3000 mi), and found that the oil change indicator reset procedure doesn't provide you any feedback that you were successful. Jeep apparently assumes that nobody would dare change the oil before the indicator lights up. I performed the procedure anyway, and since its been 6000 miles since then and no indicator so far, I guess it must've worked.

I agree. I have kept all my vehicles way past the 100k mark. Most have almost reached 200k. I know a lot of people that do the same. Vehicles cost too much to just keep them less than 100k miles. I do question the value of the extended warranty. All consumer mags say don't do it. I'm still on the fence.
