Can I go Offroad without the Offroad package?

Or will I ruin my GC? Thinking about buying an Overland 4x4 but one without the rare Offroad package. Will I tear my truck up if I do so? I'm talking moderate off-roading.

tia!

No, you wont tear it up. You can take a porche off road if you wanted.

Short answer: yes, you can take it off-road.

Not so short answer: I would think twice about getting out on any kind of trail without at least one recovery point (hitch package would work) especially if you are going anywhere NEAR mud. Much more preferable: front AND rear recovery points. Front tow hooks are about $200 to add on and there is a great thread regarding the install. (This is my next project.)

Also, without the skid plates from the offroad package you put yourself at more risk, but if you are strategic and careful and know the vehicles limitations in ground clearance you should be just fine. It is after all a Jeep.

Re: Can I go Offroad without the Offroad package?

I'll only do light off roading with mine, just to get to some fishing/hiking spots, and got the off road 1 package for two primary reasons...

I think where the gas tank is located is extremely vulnerable to getting something sharp kicked into it or it getting a bit smushed by the road when the tires go into a deep rut. I doubt I need the full skid plate package, but looking at that gas tank, and thinking where I've driven in the past, I want that thing protected. Maybe it's more for peace of mind, but that's an OK enough reason in my book.

I wanted tow hooks. I got stuck once in my Liberty in some mud once and had to get pulled out by a local farmer's tractor. It would have been a whole heck of a lot easier to get pulled out if there had been somewhere to attach the tow rope that didn't risk ripping out a major piece of suspension or drive train. That incident caused me to install tow hooks on the Liberty immediately afterwards. Never did need them after installing them, but that one day has me wanting to have tow hooks as long as I continue to sometimes drive where I drive.

Off Road package basically provides the following - indicated which are easy to add after:

1) 18" wheels - easy enough to change if you want
2) Skid Plates - Few hundred $ and you can buy and add the plates
3) Tow Hooks - as mentioned a couple hundred $ and you can add these
4) QDII with ELSD - Not something you are going to be able to add, to me it wasn't a big enough deal.

Mine doesn't have the offroad package and I have never had a problem. I do have the QDII though and it sure makes a difference when you are in a tight spot. I added front and rear recovery points and am slowly buying skid plates. Just move slowly over obstacles and it's probably best to have someone on the outside spotting you. This is what I do and haven't had any issues.

Re: Can I go Offroad without the Offroad package?

All you get is extra rubber between the wheel and the ground and skid plates. As long as you aren't in a rock garden who cares. If you are going rocking, get the plates and swap wheels if you want for off road. 17 if they fit would be best but 18 work fine. Rest is tow hooks etc. like others said. In south FL rocks are hard to find so no biggie.
