Replacing Rear Step Pad/Chrome

I have a small ding in the chrome part of my rear step pad on the rear bumper on my 2011 GC Limited. I have the replacement piece, but when I want to remove the ribbed black piece of the step pad, the back of it seems to be on there pretty good. Has anyone successfully replaced or removed this? Any posts I found weren't on a 2011+. Any help would be appreciated!!

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

... and I figured it out... the black piece does not need to be removed completely to replace the chrome piece, or "border." Very simple fix, or for those of you who want the chrome step pad on your Laredo, its quite simple!! I paid $143 shipped for the OEM chrome piece...do not buy from the dealer at $199.00!

Hi John,

I have the 2011 Laredo and am adding some chrome accents and have ordered the chrome step pad "border" - you mention it was easy to change... can you share with me how you did it? I pulled on it and it seemed somewhat tight and I don't want to break it. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Re: Replacing Rear Step Pad/Chrome

Russ,

I used a putty knife/scraper to pry up the top ribbed black step pad. Start from the corners and work your way down. You shouldnt need a ton of force, push in and pull up and the clips should pop out. This piece will come lose in the front and sides, but the back does not need to come out, nor do you want it to. From there you should be able to pry up the 'retainer' - in your case the black piece you are replacing with chrome. Mine seemed to come off pretty easily once I pried the first clip up. I would clean the area where it was once removed and then just snap the new one in place (yes, should be as easy as it sounds). Next you will want to set the ribbed top piece back in place, you will probably need to push in on the clips with the putty knife to get them to snap back in...again, start at one side and move along, if they dont go in all the way immediately thats OK, they will once you have more of them at least partially back in.

I hope that helps, if not, feel free to ask for further detail!! Good luck!
