Ready to buy--purchasing virgin
 
Fellas,

272,000 miles later my 1994 JGC limited needs to be put to rest. I am looking at the 2012 overland 4x4 HEMI. I have not purchased a car since 1999 (528i BMW). So I know the buying process has completely changed since then.

In my research, I know that you can sign up for tread lightly, and get 1% off invoice. Jeep is currently offering $ 1,000 rebate plus I just received in the mail a $ 1,000 coupon from Dodge, which can be used in conjunction as well.

I also read about Truecar.com.

Once I know what I want to pay for it, do I just call my local dealer? or do I email several internet managers with what I want to pay and go with the best offer? or can you guys recommend a good dealer/sales person in Illinois?

Also, can someone explain why some people order their cars, instead of buying off the lot? Assuming there is one sitting there with the options you want and very few miles?

Looking to finance the car and Jeep is offering 3.9% on 72 months. Since I have good credit, I should be able do better no?

I am about to buy as well. I didn't know about the tread light light discount - awesome. I did see that you have to be a member of the program (the affiliate program, not tread lightly) for at least 30 days before being able to get the discount. I'm going to order a car before the end of the year to take advantage of the incentive. I want to find out if I can order the car before the 30 days is up. I'm hoping the 30 days applies to when I actually take delivery of the car and sign all the papers.

Regarding ordering a car: if the car you want is on a lot at the dealership you want to buy from, there is no reason to order a car. Some options are very difficult to find without ordering. For example I want a V6 - very difficult to find. I've also heard that the Off Road Adventure Pack is hard to get without ordering. If the car you want isn't at your dealership, they can probably trade for it. In my case, I think they found one but it was going to be driven from a few hundred miles away and they wouldn't trailer it. I want to be the one to put the first few hundred miles on the car so I wasn't interested in the trade.

If you don't have a dealership in mind, I suggest shopping around. Maybe a good thing to do would be to review the ratings for the dealerships in your area. Check out the BBB, google search and dealerrater.com to get an idea. People fake reviews all the time but this should give you an idea. Then, call or email the internet manager and ask them if they will meet your price, based on all the discounts and incentives you have. When I bought my Hyundai Santa Fe I did everything over email and the guy even brought the car to me and we met at a Wendy's.

This time I emailed "an Internet Manager" at a dealership in town and the guy wouldn't even give me a price at first without me coming in there, which is just ridiculous. I think the goal is to cut through the crap - there is a lot of crap that goes on in many/most dealerships. They play games - they make you wait around, while they are supposedly "taking your offer to the manager". In reality they are probably watching the game on a big screen in the break room. Hopefully, by calling or emailing you can skip all this.

If they don't meet the price you want, move on to the next. You may get an offer from another dealership that you can then use with the first one.

Note: you don't have to buy the car at the dealership where you will end up servicing the car. I've asked and people don't seem to think this is an issue but other people have said they treat you better when servicing your car if you've bought from them. I don't know if that is true or not but I get the sense that there is some validity to it.

BTW - the Jeep financing, I believe is an either or thing. Meaning, you can either take $1000 incentive or the good Jeep financing rates. If you take the $1000 rebate, then the dealer could still find you a good rate through their third party people. So I suggest researching rates as well. I did this through bankrate.com. There is a credit union offering a great rate that I'll probably use that I found on there.

I ordered only because configuration I wanted was not available on the dealer's lot.

As far as pricing - you already did your homework. I emailed about 30 dealers (easy to do via Jeep website - you can specify configuration and send it to multiple dealers at once) and got meaningful responses with price quotes only from 3 of them (or 4). The rest of them just want you to come to dealership to play old sales pressure game with you.

I pitched these 3 dealers (plus one I went to for a test drive) against each other via email. They were all willing to compete on the price. At the end the dealer I used for test drive matched the lowest price and I purchased from them.

I did it the old fashioned way. Went to a couple of dealerships in town and test drove some Jeeps, Dodge Rams, and Durangos, then worked with them on numbers that I thought was fair and purchased with the dealership that offer was best.

But to each their own on how they like to purchase vehicles. I did do my homework on incentives and I did look at Truecar to get a good idea of what the prices should be.

There are different APR Deals through different regions. So maybe for the area you are in, the 3.9 is best they have to offer. But you may want to check with your bank as they may have lower rates for you. I remember not to long ago it was 1.9 or something in that range. I got mine at 3.5% @ 60 months - Through my Bank.

Here's the deal, i was looking at USED 2011 limiteds, i got my NEW 2012 limited for hundreds more than a used 2011.... let me know & good luck!

First of all, go to the finance manager and negotiate financing BEFORE you talk to the sales department. If you have good credit you will get a better rate than Chrysler is offering. Let them know that a good rate will help influence you to buy the GC from them.

You should be able to do better than 1% off invoice. Your minimum starting point should be 15% below MSRP. You will never get a better deal than what you start off asking for, so start low. I just got 6.5% off a $30K Laredo before the 1K Chrysler rebate.

Don't even mention you have a coupon from Chrysler until you have agreed on a price.

I joined treadlightly.org and then took my paperwork into the dealership last month to make my deal. Once they confirmed my volume discount paperwork (subsided by Chrysler via treadlightly.org), I immediately received 1% below factory invoice. In my case that was almost $7,000! It's a no brainer...JOIN!!!
