4X4 Help!!!!!

Snowed 14" at my house,My 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7V8 With Quadra Trac II, I Have 4-All-Time, Neutral, 4-Low.....So My front tires do not engage just my rear tires(RWD)...So my jeep goes no where in 4-All-Time.....But I put it in 4Low and IT engages all tires and i plow though the snow prefect!!! .........All fluids are good....no nosie.......Why wont my front tire engage in 4 all time......some time when i change from 4low to 4all time it will work for a few seconds??????

4 all time engages the front tires when they feel slippage, however power comes from the rear tires untill that slippage is felt.

4 low locks the front drive shaft so now your front tires are pulling and your rear tires are pushing... when slippage is felt the power transfers to the one with most grip.

sounds like you need to get your transfer case inspected... if only your rear wheels are spinning, essentially you're vehicle is 2WD... no bueno.

Re: 4X4 Help!!!!!

Yes it acts like a 2WD,But 4Low workes like a dream!

hmmm well either way your front tires SHOULD engage when in 4hi... i would still advise to seek a mechanic to take a look at your rig. you def dont want to be driving around in snow thinking you're in 4x4 when you're actually in 2wd.

Does 4LO still transfer power when it detects slip?

My 4LO (different TC) locks the front and rear driveshafts so they get the same power regardless of slipping or not. Just like my 4 part-time but w/ a different ratio in the TC.

Re: 4X4 Help!!!!!

it locks the front drive shaft but not the differential...

When i put my in 4Low i look and i hit my gas panel and one or both of my front engage after rear slips(it kicks in right away in 4low)

as it should...

your issue is with the 4hi... something there isnt working correctly... maybe its with the electronic piece that regulates when the front tires should engage in 4hi

Re: 4X4 Help!!!!!

Sounds like the viscous coupling in the transfer case is shot. My understanding is that in 4hi the coupling varies power front/rear depending on slip. In 4lo it is bypassed and locks the front and rear driveshafts together, at a gear ratio of 2.72:1. There is no electronics in the WJ transfer cases or differentials. Here is the info from wjjeeps.com: http://wjjeeps.com/tcases.htm#QUADII

I do agree with Aaron. The progressive coupling is not doing its work. Did you check the fluid level to start with?

Re: 4X4 Help!!!!!

yes all fluids are good.......It kicks in 4hi and spins all four wheels but kicks off in a few secs now?
