Undercoat - Amsoil HD Metal Protector?

Anyone use Amsoil HD Metal Protector as an undercoat? I'd like to give it a try because I don't want to have to paint anything and if I goof, the Amsoil stuff is at lease removable. I'm wondering if it's worth my time? Is there anything I should avoid spraying underneath?

I have a 2002 jeep that has 137k miles on it. It's never had any snake oil applied to it and its been driven through the worst of Wisconsin winters.... It looks great! I wouldn't waste your time with that stuff.

BManz, I did the Amsoil HDMP spray-on when I got my WK2. Now I have 65,000 or so miles and it is still in place and I have not a trace of rust other than what was there (surface rust on suspension parts) when it was new. Consider mine has two winters and a lot of Florida salty sand in between.

When you spray it on it applies with the consistency of PAM cooking spray or perhaps WD-40 and leaves a slight tacky wax film after it dries for about 24hrs; I rubbed mine with a cotton towel after spaying it on to ensure it adhered on large flat areas. Also, it will smell like crayons for a few days but this smell goes away. This particular product has been applied to all my vehicles since 1999 but I don't know if you can buy it retail or not anymore; I got two cases from an Amsoil dealer I met several years ago and one can will cover the entire underside of a large SUV. Cost was about $5/can at that time, IIRC.

I am certainly not fond of the multi-level marketing scheme Amsoil employs nor do I use their lubricants (nothing wrong with them, though), but their heavy duty metal protector is an inexpensive and effective undercoat. Some Jeep Wrangler off-road club people use it to keep mud from sticking to their frames, so you may want to check with those kinds of groups too to see how well it works in more severe conditions. For road and light trail use in mine it is doing a good job.

I dont have any experience with undercoating, but like Jeff Jeska said above, I wouldnt bother. I mean, unless you plan on keeping this Jeep for a couple decades, whats the point? You can live in the harshest environments and the undercarraige will stay just fine for as long as you, the second owner, and probably third owner will have the car. I can absolutely understand wanting to keep everything like new, but as far as the underside goes its going to take a loooooong time for there to be any corrosion under there. I would want to have a clear bra installed before anything since that for sure helps the front end.

Well against the advice I spent a whopping $8 for a can of the Amsoil HD Metal Protector and put it on before New Years and before all the rain and snow hit. It went on like WD40 and after driving through the salt covered roads I took a peak underneath and nothing is sticking to where I sprayed. It feels like candle wax but in the extreme cold it isn't flaking as it's still pliable and supposedly stays that way. Thanks for the feedback but I keep my cars & trucks for several years and like them looking nice. I've seen under a friend's three year old leased Audi and it looked pretty bad and had no added undercoat. No likes for an ugly underbody say my eyes. It sure won't hurt anything and it's only eight bucks.
