weird noise when cold

i didnt start my jeep for two days, and when i did today it made a terrible noise, kinda like a power steering pump or bad timing gear, like a deep whining sound and it kept on doing it for 10 seconds or so then quieted down but still there,so i drove it around for 10 minuets or so,drove fine but noise is still there lightly, mind you it was 2 degrees last night and only 20 today same as day before, any ideas?

Mine is a 2005 5.7 with the same/similar issue and in E. Mass. Curious what others might think also? My guess is the power steering pump? My issue has not been related to only cold temperature though. When I first start the "truck", I immediately "hear" the noise as you described. The "noise" continues as the engine increases RPM. Time on my part to lift the hood and try to isolate also. Will let you know if I find a definitave problem. My Limited is pushing 82K+.

The power steering pump resevoir on the 2005 and 2006 Hemi and Diesel can restrict fluid flow on initial start up when it's cold (below freezing) outside.

You can replace the power steering resevoir with a newer/modified version that is supposed to eliminate this problem.

Mine has done it since day one, and I've never bothered replacing, but it is an easy swap.

I would only be concerned if it continues making the noise after initial start up. The colder it is outside, the longer it will take, but it should quiet down after a few (say 10) seconds max.

So you're saying the noise is more of an inconvenience, than something serious? You said its been happening since day one to yours, how long is that? I just want to know the seriousness of the problem because I'm strapped for cash..Thanx

Also mines made a fluttering noise in the vents when I first turned the heater on that Day. Something that's never done before and it went away In a Few.

It's a 2005 (bought in November 2004) with over 150,000 miles. Without listening to the noise, I wouldn't say that yours is doing the same thing - just that the power steering pump is known to whine in the cold on initial start up. That being said, in most cases, I am not concerned about noises that happen in extreme conditions for brief periods of time. I've had the jeep running in -40 degrees in Winnipeg, Manitoba and in 100+ in the Florida summer. Sure didn't sound the same, but it keeps going .
