2011 Jeep Cherokee Overland stuck in 4th gear
 
Hello everyone,
On Monday of this week I purchased a 2011 Jeep Cherokee Overland 5.7L V8 4x4. Before I even drove it off the lot the car got stuck in 4th gear and the check engine warning light came on. After sitting in the service department for 6 hours they told me it was a problem with the computer that controls the transmission (I can't remember the name of the part they replaced). So, they swapped out the part, and "re-flashed" the computer. The result was one week of smooth driving, only to have the issue come back on Friday.

To be specific. I turn the Jeep engine on, and when i go from reverse to drive, the '4' shows up where the 'D' normally does on the dash. Even when trying to use the auto shift to down shift it stays stuck in 4th gear, and the check engine light comes on.

I plan on taking it back to the dealership tomorrow, but I'd like to know if anyone has experienced this problem. PLEASE HELP!!!

Good luck. Since it's new I would make sure they fix it again or tell them you want a different truck.

Sounds like a lemon, if you need to go back one more time they have to buy it back by law. Good luck.

I have a 2007 Jeep Cherokee Overland. The same exact thing happened to me yesterday. I brought it to the mechanic and he rest the computer. It works fine now but after reading your post, I'm afraid it will happen again.
What did you ultimately do to fix the problem?

Sounds like the limp in mode. When the transmission control senses a serious fault it locks the transmission into one of the gears so you can limp in to service. There should be a reason code set that the dealer reads, otherwise they do a quick diagnostic and reset the fault. If it happens again, they do additional diagnostics, I think.
