Diesel Cherokee Noise levels....?

Anyone know how the 2013 might be regarding sound levels at 70-80 MPH. We test drove the Overland with Hemi and it was as quiet as the X5. Would the diesel add more noise in the cabin?

I can only tell you that I test drove the VW Touareg Diesel and it was very quiet inside I am waiting for the diesel model to hit the showroom myself, its a toss up between VW and JGC. The VW is a beautiful ride but i understand it is a very expensive vehicle to maintain just have to wait it out and compare the 2 good luck

Hi Robert. The VM diesel is very quiet. At cruising speeds you can't hear a thing. Even driving around town the noise is very quiet. You can definitely hear the engine but it just sounds like a muscular engine not a rattling old diesel. Even accelerating at higher revs there isn't a noticeable rattle. Outside the car you can tell its a diesel but again its very quiet. In my personal opinion it sounds like a much quieter version of the F250 7.3 tr v8 diesel.

Edit: IMHO this is one advancement worth waiting for!

I dont have personal experience but I have watched many youtubes videos of WK2 diesels and they are friggin quiet. Infact someone did an exhaust recording from behind the car. Surprisingly you couldnt even hear the diesel compared to the Hemi and Pentestar.
I am super excited about this 2013 diesel!!

I took more notice driving to work today to make sure my post wasn't incorrect. Infact I probably have overstated the noise levels.... Driving with the window down you can't hear the engine through the window nor can you hear it through the firewall.... close the window and you can hear the grunt of the the engine as stated above but it doesn't sound like a diesel. rolling along at 60kms/hr you can't hear anything - and the comment about the F250? picture standing 50meters from it and it might sound similar....

When the diesel first arrived in Australia, I asked the salesman to start the motor with the hood down and while I stood outside the car. I could not hear the diesel, whereas the same exercise with a hemi, I heard distinct upper engine noise. Like noisy tappets.
When driving the diesel, it had excellent response, and very little interior engine noise.
I would go as far as to say that when driving the diesel, it was quieter and just as responsive, as the hemi. I am sure the hemi was probably more responsive, but the driver's feeling was minimal difference.
I don't know why Jeep USA has delayed the introduction of the diesel in the US, but, our win in Oz is your loss at the moment.
Mindyou, our Overland's dont come with the front hooks any longer, which is killing us. Apparently due to Euro regulations.

You can hear it idling when walking around the car, but it is dead quiet inside. I tested a Hemi and the CRD would be the same noise level or less.
Once you guys get them and get over the Diesel stigma that seems to plague Diesels in the USA, you will agree that it is the pick of motors in the JGC.

Don't most diesel's break in and get louder though? I know my brother's '11 f250 diesel was quiet when he first got it but now that he has 60K on it, it is a lot louder. His is 100% stock also.

As far as the diesel being just as responsive, the torque has your butt dyno all confused. :) It may feel as fast but line them up and let us know the outcome.

The US will get into diesel's when the manufacturers figure out a way to make it worth the money. Right now, it is not worth it ti buy a diesel except for a very targeted audience who needs it. For the vast majority of people, the extra mileage gained will never offset with the other factors. I would buy a diesel as my next vehicle if it made sense, time will tell though.
