2012 WK2 shifter stuck in Drive

I just dropped my Jeep off at the dealer because it has gotten stuck in drive twice today, and I'm curious if anyone else has had this happen.

I remote started the Jeep, and it warmed up for 10-15 minutes. I drove about 3 miles and stopped to get a cup of coffee and couldn't move the gear selector to park. It was stuck in the D position. Moving the selector left to right didn't change up and down through the gears, and it wouldn't move up into N or any other gear. I also couldn't turn the engine off because it kept giving me the message "Not in Park" or something similar.

I was finally able to pop the push button starter out and turn it off with the key. After a minute of wiggling the gear shift I was able to get it into park. After restarting the engine and driving to work, I had the same problem when I got to my parking space, the gear shifter wouldn't move out of D. I dropped it off at the dealer and it was having the same problem, so the technician saw it, but when he jumped in, he was able to move the shifter.

I'm afraid the person who works on it will not be able to reproduce the problem, and they will give me the car back still broken. Anyone?

All you can do is check it out thoroughly when you pick it up. Go to a parking lot, do some stop and go and shift back and forth from D to P. If it works through that, then they probably will have found the problem and repaired it.

I heard back from the dealer. They couldn't reproduce the problem, but they are going to replace the shifter anyways. They figure it's the only moving parts that could be involved. Should have it back tomorrow night.

77Cherokee, was the dealer able to get this issue resolved for you?

Same thing happened to me today. Shifter was stuck in drive. Finally after some pushing and jerking I was able to get it into park. I then put it back into drive and got stuck again. Happened about 3-4 times total......

What happens if you press the "N" button under you select train knob? Can you get it into N view that and then change the shifter?

......

I never had the problem. I was just trying to suggest a way that 67rally culd check his dealer's work...sort of an acid test, if you will.

Sounds like you have a very good dealer! Stick with him.

Sorry, I forgot all about this thread. The dealer replaced the shifter, but the problem didn't go away.

Sometimes it gets stuck in drive and I can't shift it into park for a few seconds, and other times it gets stuck for 30 sec-1min.

It's back at the dealer again but they can't replicate the problem. I'm still waiting to hear back from them. Luckily I took a few vids over the past month and put them in a youtube video, sorry some of them are sideways.

Makes me wonder if there is a switch by the foot brake that tells the shifter that the driver has the brakes applied. I know there is one on my Cayenne and if it is faulty, it will fail to shift from Park. If there is one on our Jeeps... I think it must not be sending signal to shifter that brakes have been applied. The switch might need replacement...

I agree. I suggested this to the dealership last time I brought it in and again this time. One tech thought everything was self contained in the shifter assembly, another said that there might be a switch indicating that the brake pedal was being pressed.

The first time, someone suggested that I might not be pressing the brake pedal in before trying to shift into park, that's one of the reasons I took video of me pressing the brake rather firmly.

Re: 2012 WK2 shifter stuck in Drive

I just heard back from the dealer, and while they couldn't get the shifter stuck in drive, they have been talking to Chrysler and they both agreed that it was probably the transmission valve body solenoid. They have replaced it and will do some further testing today.

I should have it back tonight. They can't guarantee that it's fixed, but they are hopeful. I'll just drive it and if the problem persists, it's going back to the dealer. I love my WK2, so I just want it running right. I'll keep this thread posted with results.
