Insurance Coverage for Modifications (Aftermarket or OEM Parts)

many of you probably know this, but i just wanted to point it out in case someone doesnt. for everyone who has mods to their WK (Aftermarket or Factory)......... make sure you have custom parts coverage on your auto policy that is adequate for the replacement value of the parts. depending on your state, insurance companies are only responsible for the parts that were on the vehicle when it rolled out of the factory and are on the build sheet. i just had an accident and luckily PA requires companies to cover $1000 in custom parts automatically when you have comprehensive and collision. that covered my hid headlight and srt grille for this accident. i have since added more coverage for my wheels, seats and navigation in case of theft or total loss. it is pretty cheap coverage for valuable mods

One thing to mention on this is the fact that the aftermarket items must be installed on your vehicle. If you have two sets of wheels and tires, and something happens to the ones you aren't using on the vehicle... the additional endorsement will not cover them. Foe example, if my summer wheels are stolen from my garage while they are off for the winter... NO coverage!

exactly:thumbsup:...... my policy is done 6 months at a time so i will increase the coverage during the march to september policy to cover the wheels and tires. for the other 6 months i will reduce it when the wheels are in my garage and covered by my homeowners insurance.

Unfortunatelu, no you are wrong... your homeowner policy specifically excludes auto parts, equipment or accessories. Sorry, no coverage there. Plus the state specific endorsements ammend the coverage lines to say that the items are excluded even if they aren't attached to the vehicle.

I guess I should mention that I am a property claims adjuster for a large insurance company. I handle mainly theft claims and we have to deny coverage for auto parts being stored in the home since they are specifically excluded in the terms of the policy.

It would depend on the company you are with, as products would vary from each. I would make sure before adding anything on to your policy that the coverages apply to the items both when they are on the vehicle and when they are being stored. Normally on a Homeowner policy the only things that can be endorsed, are jewelry, artwork, golf equipment, furs, coins, etc. Like I said, it will depend on which company you are with, but most are very similar.
