Rola basket with 6 daylighters 4 hid 2 130 watt

so i just got a rola roof basket and its time to mount my lights. Thought is i have 6 day lighters and would love to mount all 6 on the front of the basket. do u think that will just be 2 much and i should only put 4. And as far as wiring them the plan is to run 12-14 gauge speaker wire incab to the trunk area and have it come up threw the lift gate area to the basket and then have a sealed hobby box with my relays ect. up in the basket so there sealed from water and then some where in the trunk area i could put another fuse aka like a sub one so that it would be like a quick disconnect if i wanted to take the basket off. power draw in wattage for the 4 hids are 55 watts a ballest and amperage starting is 6 and running is around 3. i think id be ok.. any thoughts would be great and as far as mounting them goes im gonna weld tabs where ever i want to put them.

dude you are way way off , dont forget dc power is way more suseptable to resistance due to length of run better do some googleing

ok i just went to a conversion page 12 volts x 220 watts is almost 19 amps you need like #10 or 8 wire at least to get power to the roof and if youre coming all the way from the battery id say #8
i tried to post the chart i found but for dc voltage with 220 watts you can only go 16 feet with # 8 27 foot run with #6. this is rounded up to 20 amps

google "dc wire table" than go down to the 12volt section youll see where my info came from

go here to convert watts to amps www.jobsite-generators.com/power_calculators.html

I went by the lower chart in this link - i had lower watts, so i used 16AWG - i assume you'll be gauging yours off of 240W(220W actual), so something like 14-10awg, depending on length

lol thats why i said its 6 amps starting per ballest..... and 3 amps running i can do basic math. but thanks for the tip on the wire length.. is there a better spot to run thicker wire to a basket thats clean?

Check my build for possible references

yeah i took a look i like the door idea a lot better. did u ground to the basket or run a ground next to the positive back down the door frame?

Re: Rola basket with 6 daylighters 4 hid 2 130 watt

I ground at my fuse block, which grounds at my batt. I used different gauges, but speaker wire, so it had the pos and ground - easier to manage the ran wires...

i hate to tell u guys this but that chart is retarded, there is no way under any circumstance you can use 18 gauge wire to handle 20 amps even if it only 1 inch but that chart says its ok up to 3 feet no way
hey do what you want but when you smell burning dont be suprised

based on that chart you could run 100 amps on #8 ha ha , so why are the battery cables like #2 wire it certainly dosent take 100 amps to start the truck. with there logic u only need like # 10 wire for the whole truck, im telling you somethging is way wrong with this chart

and for what its worth i have 30 years in the hvac industry so i do now something about electricity
gonna do more research ill be back

ok go to the12volt.com up top on the left it says calculators click that than go to stereo and power wiring than it will open up another chart you will see it says 200 watts is 32 amps(which is a differant number than i came up with) and that anything over12 feet needs #4....and #4 is good up to 400 watts........so yea your sizing is way off happy wireing, oh and youre welcome

Re: Rola basket with 6 daylighters 4 hid 2 130 watt

go to the12volt.com click on calculators, charts than down to stereo and power wiring
and 55 watts converts to 4.5 amps not 3 as you stated so you are looking at 18 amps running not 12

please post this in the lighting section and see what they say.....
.............done more reading and at this point im confused looks like a smaller wire carries more current when on a dc circuit BUT... you still have to account for voltage drop too small a wire and the lights will be dimmer than they should be ex. # 16 wire over 20 feet has an almost 28% drop in voltage with 20 amps so your voltage would only be 8.6volts. 14gauge=17% or 9.9 volts,12ga is 10.8% or10. 6 volts, 10 ga. is 6.8%drop @11.1 volts,8ga is4.3% @11.4 volts,#6 is 2 % @11.6 volts
so in summary looks like the most efficient size for youre load is #10
christ im tired just spent an hour looking all this crap up,good luck

it kinda makes sense but then it dosent. i mean how do people run 5 150watt daylighters on stock 16g day lighter harnesses with no issues?? i have run 2 sets of 55 watt hids on 16g wire and have had no issues with flickering ect?

kennzz05 01-29-2012 07:31 AM

Re: Rola basket with 6 daylighters 4 hid 2 130 watt

really have no idea but i bet if you read voltage at the wires end it would be significantly less than at the battery. I would think the daylighter harness is only for 2 lights not 5. And remember just cause something works dosent mean its safe or right.
i gotta say that im blown away at the fact you can run that kind of amperage thru such a small wire but my experiance is mainly with ac current not dc. but again theres still the issue of voltage drop, if you want full power and full brightness going to those lights than id go with the size i suggested. you only have to run 1 power wire up to the roof and than you can split off of it with the smaller wires going to the lights
