Overhead DVD

Has anyone installed an aftermarket overhead DVD to JGC 2011 with single pane sunroof?

norymeoreason41 02-04-2012 04:53 PM

I haven't, but am interested in the same thing. Does anyone have any thoughts? Also, does anyone know if the factory option is available after purchase as an add on?

Factory option is available, but I was told by Jeep dealer that it could not be installed on a vehicle with "either" sunroof.

Here is the link to MOPAR DVD:

It states that it cannot be installed on a vehicle equipped with either sunroof. Is this what you have?

It doesn't make sense to me

If you google, you'll see some vids and examples of overhead DVDs being installed in other SUVs with sunroofs. I'd ask a reputable/local shop (not Best Buy). They may not want to touch it due to liability. I'm also interested -- as my kids miss the DVD we had in our Aspen (no sunroof). I did call my Best Buy (as they are about the only option left), and they said "you should be able to". However, the actual install guys were already gone for the day, and this was coming from a joe schmoe on the sales floor. Nebraska Furniture Mart did an excellent job on my Aspen, but they got rid of all their car audio/video :(. Once I get the funds, I'm going to ask a local shop -- who does excellent work as well.

Would you run into potential electrical system warranty issues with Chrysler if you didn't use the MOPAR/Jeep dealer option?

You shouldn't. A typical aftermarket system will be self-contained except for 12vdc power. If the sound can connect through your existing audio system, it will be either through the AUX input or FM.

If you go for just an overhead monitor connected through a Lockpick to the factory DVD player, that should still not present a problem; unless the Lockpick presents problems on the CANBus (as indicated by a few members here). If you start to see strange behavior in your vehicle, disconnect the Lockpick and see if everything goes back to normal. Not saying the Lockpick is a bad way to go, just be aware that it has occasionally (according to some posts in this forum) been the cause of random issues in the vehicle and trouble-shoot accordingly.

I will take a picture of the wife's car tonight when I get home if you want. I don't have it in my Laredo X. But here is a video about it. Definitely the exact setup that we have. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5FcVKGLVaA

Looks like its called the VES.

Thank you. I will try to ask the Jeep Dealer again, why the unit in MOPAR catalogue cannot be installed on a vehicle equipped with sunroof. I hope they will be able to give me an answer.

My thoughts were to just buy the kids iPads as it is way cheaper than the factory system or an aftermarket retrofit. Just my .02.
