To buy or not to?

I finally found a WJ for sale in me area in my price range. 02 Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7 HO, 110k miles, 4wd (Quadra-trac, unfortunately), towing package, sunroof, 10-cd changer, heated seats, and all the other goodies. The dealer it is at is asking $6500 for it.
It needs all four tires, (no problem for me, I get all tires and parts for my vehicles at cost at the shop I work at), and I heard the blend door actuator making some noises (starting to strip?), again, I can do the repair myself.

It looks exactly like this: http://www.wjjeeps.com/colors_graphitemetallic.jpg(sourced from wjjeeps.com)

I really would rather have 2wd, or at least the Selec-Trac like my old Wagoneer. I could swap it out for a Selec-Trac fairly easily. I found a few low mileage transfer cases for sale around $250 plus shipping with 6 mo. warranties. It would be a direct swap, right? (Besides the bezel) Are the splines the same?

Would you buy this Jeep, or keep looking?

Thanks,

RD

That's not bad. How is it mechanically? Oh yeah BTW ask how long it's been sitting on the lot. If it's a long time try and get it a little lower. Just say hey you never know if something might not work after one month of not functioning.

Re: To buy or not to?

I'm sure I can talk them down, because of the tires, and especially the actuator (won't tell them I'm a mechanic and give them a quote of what our shop would normally charge to change it). The motor is a bit dirty, but it's sand, not oil, the guy said it was because of the engine cleaner or polish they had used. It shifts good, fluid smells good, might need to do a tranny service, a very small amount of tranny fluid seeping around the pan gasket, no rear end noise. All windows, radio controls, and locks work. It does need hood struts.

A blend door repair on a WJ is a 1200 dollar job. Talk them down.

Don't talk them too much though. Make sure the brakes are pretty good too.

Re: To buy or not to?

I have 2 dealers going to the auto auctions Tuesday and Wednesday, specifically looking for a 99-04 Grand Cherokee V8, preferably 2WD, but if not, Selec-trac, with 100k miles or so or lower. I'll see if they find anything.

The more I think about it, I would have to put at least $700 into this thing to get it right, not to mention the time involved with the blend door replacement. I think I'll keep looking but keep an eye on this one..

I don't think that Jeep gave a 2WD option to any WJ with a V8.

I've driven and worked on one, so they do exist.
