how much coolant does a 4.7 V8 take?

I did a drain and refill of the coolant today and I put two gallons of the mopar antifreeze just like the guy at the dealer recommended. But I poured the two gallons and resovoir still almost empty. I looked at the service manual and it says to service the cooling system with 14.5 quarts which is alittle more than 3 and a half gallons. I told the guy at the parts department I've already gone through two gallons and its still empty the radiator and the overflow tank and he told me something must be wrong, now I'm confused.

its 50% antifreeze and 50% water.

http://www.wkjeeps.com/wk_maintenance.htm#COOLING

the second line of the cooling section:

The recommended mixture is 50/50 ethylene-glycol and water. Never use pure antifreeze.

X2. Did you mix it? If not you will have to drain it all again

I didn't the guy at the service department told me to just pour it in that I didn't need to add water plus in the ingredients on the gallon it mentions water but it doesn't say anywhere on the gallon that it's 50/50 or pure antifreeze.

Whoops. What's the risk here?

When I got the coolant from the dealer it was pure and not mixed with water. Just take care of your issue the easy way. Since you already have 2 gallons of pure coolant in there, drain about one half of a jug back into one of your empty containers. Buy two gallons of pure distilled water from the store and just pour in 1.5 gallons. Finally you will need to burp/bleed the system from any air pockets. Done.

What you are risking by having pure coolant in your block is a very in-efficient cooling system on very very hot days and your Jeep may overheat. Generally in very very cold climates you can use less than 50% mix of water in your antifreeze. Point is just make sure you do approximately a 50/50% mix of distilled water and coolant and you will have 0 problems.

Risk was that my engine started to overheat and it sounded like it wanted to blow up it was an inch away form the H on the temp gauge. Started bucking lastly I turned it off. Waited 5 mins started and it stalled on me twice. When I drained the antifreeze and mixed it then bleed the system everything was fine. Damn antifreeze gallon is not clear, it states you behave to use 50/50 but it never says on the gallon that its concentrated or 50/50 it says embittered. Now what the hell does that mean. And the pros at Jeep told me the system takes 2 gallons, service manual says the system takes 14.5 quarts + 1 quart in the resovoir. Because of misinformation I took the chance that I might have messed up my engine. And those stupid techs lied to me, I asked if mopar sold engine flush solution and they said no, when I looked up the service manual it says yes and has the parts number.

If you walk into a auto parts store, aren't most of the coolants going to be the 50/50? I topped off my coolant a month ago with a leftover bottle my dad had. I just figured coolant for one car was the same as the next. (I admitedly know nothing about cars) I have no idea what was used prior to me getting the car, but I used to take my car to Jiffy Lube for oil changes. (yea I know) Who knows what they used.

I haven't noticed any problems. I might just drain the resevoir and add some 50/50 and let that work it's way through. A coolant flush is way over my head.

You have to be careful with a lot of the pre-mixed (or even general coolant found at your general auto parts store). A lot of these SAY that they are compatible with all types of anti-freeze, but can still lead to problems. Whether mixing/topping off a little bit with one of these will make a difference...I have no idea. We require HOAT MS-9769, and we are not supposed to mix the Mopar stuff with anything else (including other HOAT anti-freezes!).

It all seems rather complicated, so I just use the Mopar stuff - nice and simple (though admittedly a little more expensive!)

Manufacturers SHOULD and more often than not, will list on the jug whether that gallon you buy is a 50/50 mix or not. It will clearly say '50/50' OR 'Ready to Use' somewhere on that jug. Just go to like advance auto parts website for example and type 'coolant' for a simple search on their site. They will show the regular and pre-mixed. Here they explicitly state whether a jug is 50/50 or not. In the case of Mopar coolant...its NOT 50/50 so mix that shit.

For your Jeep or any chrysler product you should be buying a HOAT coolant. If you don't want to spent the price at the dealer than the only other coolant i know of that is approved to use is the Zerex G-05. --> http://www.valvoline.com/products/br.../antifreeze/42.

You see that's why I asked every coolant that I've seen either says 50/50 or something along the lines of it being concentrated. Nowhere I did drain and refilled that shit, damn bastards at the dealership wanted me to mess up my Jeep!! The mopar coolant says that a 50/50 solution works best but doesn't say if the coolant in the actual gallon is 50/50, I guess I could have waited to get the z g05 but I was anxious to work on my Jeep.

Funny thing is I called mopar not to long ago and they said Just like you guys I had to mix it. You live and you learn, I just hope my engine is ok because the way it sounded like when it was overheating, like it was gonna blow up.
